Never drinking Alcohol

Do you think minimizing the amount of alcohol you drink throughout your lifetime will most definitely benefit you in the long term? I'm surrounded by young people binge drinking every single weekend and they don't seem to be too worried about it. I always end up wondering if I'm simply being too cautious. Then again, I don't really enjoy drinking to begin with. Either way, I've read a number of studies discussing the damaging effects a night of heavy drinking can have on the developing brain and its hard for me to simply dismiss this. I care about my body. What's your thoughts?

Weed protects your brain from these effects.
My theory is that you only live once. Burn out while you can. Shine bright for the short time you're allowed on this earth. If that means chugging whiskey and flying down the back roads till you wrap around a tree well then by all means.

nearly all drugs are bad in some way for a developing brain. I personally dislike alcohol and find it boring but every now and then getting wasted is pretty fun.

That's no way to burn out, that's the way to flicker and fail. Being stupid isn't shining bright.
If you like to drink socially, and you don't feel it interferes with your life, then I don't see a big problem. But I don't really enjoy it personally.

See, my problem is, I like to experiment with different substances. I know drugs can be damaging to the brain, but I normally find that the pros outweigh the cons. I use all substances in moderation, weed being the most heavily used and even thats kept to weekends for the most part. The thing is, all of the damaging effects caused by weed have for most part been proven to be reversible. I'm not sure if the same can be said about alcohol, it is surprisingly neurotoxic.
Really, what I care most about, is holding onto my intelligence and sanity as I transfer into my old age. I know a lot of old people who more or less stopped using their brain, it pains me to see them. I wanna be one of those old dudes who keeps their shit together, and as dumb as it sounds, I worry about how my substance use will effect this goal.

Way to go man. I'm backing off it for a while cause I was doing it too much.
I've seen a lot that very moderate drinking has serious health benefits, but any binge drinking will more than cancel that out. Then again, here's what 5 glasses of wine a week does to your face, but in reverse:

I hardly agree that "chugging whiskey and flying down the back roads till you wrap around a tree" could be considered equivilent with shining bright in any case. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy drinking-- I have 1-2 drinks at least 3 times a week. I sometimes like whiskey, and I sometimes like getting drunk, but I grew out of my binge drinking phase before I turned 22. There is no mystery in getting piss-wasted. Nor do I find benefit in it at all.
I see moderate alcohol use as beneficial, particularly decent red wines and craft beers, but if you're getting drunk off of them you're probably doing your body more harm than good. Sometimes harming the body a little bit is fun though

Thanks man, I'm honestly very fragmented on this topic. It's like part of me would love to break loose and binge on certain substances but there's another part of me that won't let it happen no matter what. Sometimes I feel like I'm being a bitch and shouldn't worry so much but I can't help it. Ever since I did mushrooms for the first time I became hypersensitive towards my mental and physical health.
That photo is real strange, maybe its the light, but it looks like all of the blood in her face is gone...

OMG I need to try mushrooms then OJ (you never said if you're lost in the rain or not).
To chime in about your dilemma, I'll share one thing I've realized over the last several years: it is drastically easier to keep your good health than to get it back

My dad drank a shitload until he was about 40, like 20+ drinks a week, and my mom has probably had less than 20 drinks in her life, and my mom is in much worse physical health than my dad. Neither has ever smoked cigarettes or used other drugs.

Is being lost in the rain an analogy for something haha. I'm a fleet foxes fan . Either way, I feel as though I'm lost in the rain on a regular basis.
And ya, that is exactly why keeping my health is so important. I look at my aunts and uncles and they all have the exact same attitude, "its too late for me". Like they are out of their young years and there's nothing better to do than go to work, take care of their kids, and drink. I don't wanna live that life style, I wanna make my time on this earth worth it. I like surfing and running, I like learning about new things, I don't wanna live the semi-alive lifestyle that so many American adults seem to follow.
Sorry about the rant, I'm passionate on keeping ones body and mind alive

Dude yeah, well-said. I'm obviously less inhibited than you but I am proud of myself that I've recognized when I need to back off with DXM last summer and with alcohol now. Now that I beat my K2 addiction, I hope not to get completely out of control again.
Related ish, but you might've seen my thread... I'm literally scared about sobering up for a bit here because I am afraid I'll find out I made myself dumb.
I also really worry about what my non-abused Adderall might mean health-wise.
Also, I feel the exact same way about how most people live. They don't actually live... they subsist or exist and that's all. I don't think I'm ever going to be sober sober forever, but drugs and alcohol are a much better garnish than entre.

I'm not really a big drinker (though I am a bit drunk right now, mainly because I'm on probation and can't smoke weed) but I think it's fine in moderation. I more or less hate the taste of alcohol and can't stand beer so I usually just take some shots of whiskey every couple of weeks to chill out.

Morrowasted is completely right. I hate being lectured and so I don't lecture others, I think people should have the right to do with their bodies as they please. Personally though, I think moderation serves the body well. When you sober up you may feel sorta burnt out for a bit but if you treat your body well and you keep your substance use limited, you will begin to experience extremely clarity.
I'm prescribed adderall as well, my focus is terrible and so it benefits me greatly, but I try to use it as little as possible. My cousin was prescribed the stuff for years and eventually came off completely. He turned out alright, think it took him a while to rekindle his internal drive but he was able to.
Don't give up though dude, if your working towards living a healthier life and your determined it will come over time

This is a fact. The human body did not evolve this far without acquiring the necessary knowledge and resources to repair itself. Although obviously heavy consumption of alcohol is not good at all for the body, and I think that drinking should be carefully limited as to keep it in moderation. I myself drink occasionally with a friend but very rarely, and I haven't consumed alcohol for a couple of months. I can see the appeal in frequent drinking but it is just not my thing. I think it's reasonable to mention that I do enjoy making wine and mead on a small scale, but rarely do I drink to get obliterated.
But If someone enjoys drinking, then they should drink. No one is completely free of damaging influences and if you are, are you really getting the most out of your life?
