Even if the change is not to something ideal, it can still help. I've experienced this a few times, never quite on the scale Shivas is talking about, but still.

I think its pretty obvious how a change of environment or vacation can be uplifting but Shiva is advocating that OP become a bum. Not a vacation or a change of scenery for the good, but become an actual bum.

I've met quite a few "bums" who chose the homeless lifestyle... they all seemed to be quite happy actually.

That's not to say all/most homeless people are happy, most of them are not. But that's one's that are there because of mental disease, drug addiction, being completely broke, etc... not of their own free will.

All the homeless I've known have been in that situation not of their free will, but because they couldn't hold a job or something. I let a homeless woman set up a tent in my backyard for over a month until I got a notice from the city for a zoning warning. I usually get along pretty well with homeless but I don't advise it as a way to get out of a rut. It seems like a much shittier rut to be in to most people than the one OP is in.

Remember he asked "What was going on? More importantly, what enabled you to get out of it" and I'm wondering if Shiva took his own advice and got out of a rut by becoming homeless... I suspect he's just repeating something he read in his eastern religious studies. And if it works for him then good, but its so far out of left field that there just are not many people that think of homelessness as a great vacation from a rut like he does.

Idk, I think it can definitely have the potential to help someone, I can easily see how this could help someone like me:shrug2:

For as long as I can remember I've had a strong urge to leave society and go live in the woods(even before I discovered psychedelic drugs), so idk, maybe I'm just weird...

I like the outdoors too. I camp and go backpacking through national parks. I've done a bit in the appalacian mountains and thr cumberland gap, the kind of mountains you can hike up without ropes, I'm no mountaineer but do like the steepness and trying to get good footing, especially on the way back down .

You ever walk the Appalachian Trail?

I want to sometime in the near future, but I want to see what it's like out west first though.

There is a large difference between telling someone to go live the life of an urban homeless person, and telling someone to go travel somewhere they've always wanted to go--my advice to 'sell everything you don't need' isn't an invite to become a penniless bum, but a way to free up some money for travel while also reducing physical clutter.

I'm telling st1llnox to go spend a few months in Peru or Egypt--not sure how you interpreted this as me recommending urban homelessness.

With that all said and done though--yes, I have taken my own advice--I wouldn't feel comfortable suggesting it to anyone else if I didn't have my own personal verification--I'm not just preaching something I've read out of a buddhist text but sharing my own experiences.

I'm assuming your response to me in this thread is partially a repercussion of our discussion in your thread on compassion--suffice it to say that I am not buddhist or religious--though I can understand why folks would think I am, due to my preference for esoteric symbolism--I've had my own personal life experiences, and afterwards found these experiences reflected in various teachings, including buddhism--do I expect you or anyone else to take my word for it?--no--but do I know that everything I say is independently verifiable--yes--because if I've done it you can too--so I will say my part and let others draw their own conclusions--just don't say I'm merely writing about concepts that I have no personal knowledge of--the details of my life may surprise you...

No I never did. I did things like spend a week and a half at a time backpacking through the Alleghany national park or asceding the Clinch mountain in TN. I like the idea of doing the Appalacian trial but its so long it would probably take a whole summer, and you couldn't carry all your supplies for the whole thing. I never did one so long that it would require resupply during the actual trip.

Yeah, Allegheny isn't too far from me, I live in NE Ohio right on the PA line, I'll have to check it out one day.

And yeah, it definitely takes a while to walk the whole Appalachian Trail.
