Ever been in a rut for a long time?
    #19224053 - 12/03/13 08:12 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Not necessarily super long-term, but definitely 6 months+.

What was going on?

More importantly, what enabled you to get out of it and could you tell it was going away or did you just one day realize "shits good again!"?  Did you do deliberate things or did it just happen?

For sure. I was in a depression for over a year. Basically August 2012- three weeks ago.
What got me out of it?
I thought about all of my life up to this point, and as much awful, terrible things that have already happened, they haven't taken me out.
I decided that depression was NOT going to be how I went out. It was too pitiful a foe to let it win.. When I do go down, something EPIC is gonna do it.

Then I felt better.

grow and learn. keep on moving up. don't let anything get you down, ever. ever. even in the darkest of times, find inner strength towards positivity.

You're surprisingly clandestine about the plot aspects of your life haha. That's okay though.

I appreciate the advice. I watched Joel Osteen with my mom about intentionally noticing when you have negative thoughts and then deliberately thinking of something positive.

"Rut Jeff" has so little resemblance to who I really am and what I'm about, ya know? Glad you're doing well and I admire your attitude :sun:

I wage a never ending war over falling into a rut or a daily routine that doesn't stimulate or inspire me. I am a person that procrastinates quite a bit and this has been an aspect of my personality for as long as I can remember. The only way to get ahead in the fight is to actually get something done the moment you think of it. For example I will have a thought that always goes along the lines of "I am going to do that later, I am busy right now" when really I am just sitting there, wasting time. So again, the only way I can climb out of a daily routine is to take action the moment I am confronted with the task or activity.

Sometimes you just have to make a change. Not necessarily some direct fix of a problem, sometimes you just need to end an era and start a new one right? I knew I was unhappy, for a lot of reasons, and it was time to get out of my living situation.
Or maybe you need to work on fixing a small problem with yourself, and that will affect you in a larger way. Like I knew cigarettes were killing me and I should quit for a long time. What I didn't expect after I quit was that, not only could I breath easier, but I felt really good about quitting. I needed that success, and that knowledge that I could change myself. That little(ish) step led me on a path to greater self improvement.

When I feel lame, I force myself to do something awesome. Slow and lazy and bored (being boring)? Go for a run.

I've been in a rut for years, as long as I can remember. Often times I feel like I take one step forward and two steps back.  All I can do is learn from past mistakes and keep moving forward. Sometimes life feels like a constant struggle. Experiences like this can make or break you but those who persevere often come through as stronger for it. My favorite people are those who have seen real hardship and gained wisdom and compassion from their experiences. I would like to think I'm on that path.

Yeah man, this is day 1 of no alcohol. Day 7 of no cigs plus daily exercise.

I already feel loads more happy than I have in forever, but the reality I wrought is not a nice one to wake up to unimpaired.

I need to start doing that... I spent 7 hours and 40mg of Adderall on Shroomery today.

Very helpful, thanks! Having just quit cigs, I feel good about that and I feel reaaaally good about this break from drinking. It's neat and enjoyable to feel good instead of merely feeling pleasure.

I thought going back to college in Jan would be what I needed but now this is not going to happen. I feel like I've been suffocating and that those with the air just said "five more minutes!"

I think getting out of McDonalds would be a great and nice shift toward my next era.

Or maybe psyches? My 5HT2A & C receptors are still virgin.

I ended up getting stuck in a rut for two years when I got out of the military. It started as an extended vacation that I took to 'deprogram' myself. Somehow the party didn't want to die: I was getting drunk 3-4 nights out of the week, and smoking weed all day everyday. I worked shitty odd jobs in a small town that I hardly ever left.

I ended up unemployed for awhile, I couldn't afford to smoke, and I couldn't afford to drink so I was sober. That was when I realized I was stuck in a rut. I had been medicating myself into oblivion, and I was too intoxicated to even notice how lame my life was becoming.

So I remained sober, saved up some money doing odd jobs, and then me and the lady I was seeing moved four hours away for a change of scene. The move encouraged me to start taking some initiative in my life, and I decided to start going to college.

Laying off the drugs for a while helps, if you're intoxicated all of the time then sobriety becomes the head change. Changing something else up helps too, move out of town, or get a new job, or even excersize routinely. Also, finish something you started but didn't complete, or start doing all of the things that you've been procrastinating in order from easiest to accomplish to hardest.

They say an alcoholic doesn't stop drinking until they've had enough. Its the same with a rut. After you've been in the hole long enough you climb back out because you want some sun or fresh air. The motivation can't come from outside yourself but only from within.

Have you tried applying at McDonalds? I feel getting the job helped me a lot at first but now, 6 months later, friends are starting to openly ask why I aimed so low and I'm wondering the same.

They really do take just about anyone.

:kaneclap: You rock and thanks for your advice. Your input's always good and you're such a respectful person... that's becoming rare around here.

Maybe that's kind of what's happening because lately, I've started taking decisive action to improve my life in several areas. Come to think of it, getting fed up with various things is exactly what prompted these changes but I didn't think of it in relation to my global rut, plus I'm VERY young to my new lifestyle changes so I can't claim any sort of victory... yet

I feel a bit more empowered now . I also consulted the I Ching and it seemed pretty spot on: exhaustion and then peace.
