Oculus Rift + dr00gz * 2
    #19223878 - 12/03/13 07:42 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

It's exam week, which means it's time for me to indulge in my favorite and most effective distraction - the Shroomery! :awesome:

So I'm here to ask: is anyone else as giga-stoked about the Oculus Rift as I am? I haven't actually gotten to try one out, but I've watched at least a couple hundred videos of tech demos and people's feedback/impressions, and I'm completely on board with the view that this is actually, finally, honest to beelz, the dawn of true VR.

Even with the first iteration of the devkit, with it's laughably low resolution and sometimes puke-inducing latency issues, the feedback is phenomenal. People actually FEEL like they're somewhere else, to the point that they instinctively reach out in an attempt to physically interact with what they're seeing. I've read that some forms of in-game movement - like accelerating and falling - actually induce a real feeling of motion in a lot of people. That's some illusion if you ask me.

Like, check this shit out:

Gary Jules is cool and all, I think that's a good song for showing off the demo, and this would definitely be totally awesome as is... but imagine that with some Shpongle and maybe a gram of cubes. I want to experience that. Honestly, I'd be curious as to what kind of psychonaut wouldn't want to have a safety-guaranteed psychedelic experience in outer space.

There's a handful of Oculus Rift space sims in development, which will undoubtedly be pretty cool. But I think I'm probably more excited at the potential of slower paced psychedelic VR adventures. Tripping spheres while strolling across the planes of Skyrim? How about surviving the night in Minecraft on a couple hits of white on white, especially with a couple friends? Even just driving around on Planetside 2 would be completely surreal.

Not to mention flying planes, captaining deep sea submersibles, and surviving zombie infested woodlands.

For the sake of clarity: I'm not advocating that any of this won't be ridiculously cool without psychedelics; it's just an idea that seems pretty damn exciting to me and I haven't seen much discussion of it anywhere. Also, I'm sure dissociatives would pair with VR experiences exceptionally well too, but for me psychs are what come to mind first.

My buddies boss got one, and they got Brutal DooM working on it; some guy programmed a port to the Oculus, said it is insane!!

Hahaha! Finally!

Haha me too. There still isn't a precise release date, but sometime in Q3 of 2014. So basically next summer or early fall. And $300 or less is what they say, Azure. :fungo:

You've got to look at it compared to other monitors and HDTVS; essentially what you're getting is a screen big enough to fill up your entire field of view. And yeah, even games that haven't been modded to work as VR with the Rift- you'll be able to play in 2D as if you were looking at a big flatscreen.

I'm not sure if that exact app works with games or just movies, but they've said it will be something similar.

$300 is expensive for full a complete virtual reality experience with two displays?  Seems pretty damned reasonable to me.

I definitely would love to try it out.  Looks really cool.

Yeah for sure, it has full head-tracking in case that isn't apparent. It looks like there's a chance that the consumer version might come with even more motion tracking capabilities from what's been going around lately.

Hanging out with Shroomery members in VR could be kind of rad.

Check out how these guys turned Reddit into a 3D environment. I could totally see that being applied to forums. Like hallways where each room is a thread/topic or something.

On second thought that would probably turn out kind of lame and SecondLifey.

damn i'm intrigued. the device itself isn't doing the processing/graphics though is it? it can't be for <300$. so do you connect it to a PC and it basically serves as your monitor?

Correct good sir! It's basically a horizontal smartphone screen that shows a slightly different image on the left and right sides. The images are from perspectives that are around 60mm apart, which corresponds with the average distance between people's pupils. That's how stereoscopic 3D stuff works. They fit the extra wide image onto the screen by distorting it fish eye style, then a pair of lenses in each eyepiece of the headset reverses the warped effect, so you end up with a non-distorted extra wide picture.

Haha woah, you lucky goose. How was it?! I know people usually say they're pretty lame but I would think they would have to be at least a little bit awesome.

https://www.oculusvr.com/order/

It's $300.  Vorpx is $44.

You plug an HDMI or DVI cord into it and it basically acts as a second monitor as far as your computer is concerned.

CHECK THIS OUT. The announcement and trailer just happened a day or two ago and there isn't a whole lot of information. If this ends up on PC with Rift support it'll be totally nuts. Seems like it would be pretty ridiculous if the developers spent as much time as they must have on this and didn't plan for Rift support. Seamless ground to space transitions (the cut at 1:07 is a little fishy) are a big deal.

Procedural = basically means the terrain/game world is generated completely on the fly. Like Minecraft worlds and Terraria. And the weapons in Borderlands, I think.

Well there's pretty good evidence that looking at things very close to you for long periods of time is bad for your eyes, maybe not so good evidence that radiation from consumer electronics is significantly carcinogenic, but there's some.  I'm not going to dig up studies because I never claimed to be able to prove anything, just good ol' fashoned paranoia here.

As far as me not liking gadgets, I blame LSD.  I can't get over the idea that I'm just sitting in a room staring at blinking lights in favor of interacting with a world that is a billion times more complex and interesting.  I consider it a good thing, because I used to get obsessive with stuff like that.

The Oculus dudes say that with the way the pairs of lenses work, your eyes are focused as if the image was infinitely far away. So any strain normally associated with looking at stuff that's really close to your eyes shouldn't be a factor. Which I admittedly don't really understand. Haha.

But I know you intended what you said to be taken lightly.

I get where you're coming from with the blinking lights/unjustifiable use of time compared to the natural world, I'm pretty sure. If I understand you correctly, I used to feel the same way all the time, but for me LSD actually probably played a decent roll in reversing that. Depending on how you choose to view video games (or interactive entertainment, or technology in general)- and if you think about what they actually are and what has had to happen in order for them to exist in their current form, they can seem as complex as the natural world. Or rather, indistinguishable from it.

Beavers make dams, chimpanzees use sticks to get ants, otters open shells with rocks, and have you seen the video of the crow that spontaneously bends a piece of wire into a hook to get food out of a jar? Lots of animals exhibit an ability to utilize the world around them to creatively solve problems, and lots of them use tools. We have more complex brains capable of more complex tasks, and the desire to create and to explore are arguably two of the most inherent human qualities. Computers are tools, and by playing video games we're utilizing a novel method of exploring our own nature. Replace "Computers" and "playing video games" in that sentence with "Psychedelics" and "tripping" and notice how easily those ideas parallel. It's no surprise that I love both.

I mean, modern computers are the result of many^n tiny improvements over a long period of time in much the same way that biological life is- via evolution/replication. For both computers and life, the all time height of their degree of complexity has always been in the present, which is to say that "neither has ever been more complex than it is right now" would always have been a true statement at the time it was said, regardless of when that was. Complexity is a compilation of simplicities, and I think that computers and life are probably the best illustrations of that.

I think shit like awesome graphics, robots, and computers are bound to happen given the quality of our cognitive equipment. It's inevitable in the same way that a healthy seed, given the proper conditions, will grow into a tree. So it's interesting to me that technology is so often thought of as unnatural or "artificial." It seems to me that technology and humans go hand in hand as do beavers and dams.

The line that separates technology from nature, at least to the extent that it's commonly drawn, seems like mostly an illusion as far as I can tell. Technological development is an expression of our GENES.

Especially in the case of graphics, and even more so with virtual reality- we're likely just around the corner from being able to create photorealistic graphics that can be run by computers affordable to the average first world consumer. Like, having the ability to create and experience worlds that are visually indistinguishable from nature is a fucking insane concept with major philosophical implications. Obviously headgear like the Rift are the first iterations of the visual side of virtual reality, and there are multiple motion capture peripherals being developed. Maybe it's the koolaid, but I won't be surprised if within 10 years we're able to purchase a VR rig and step into a fully immersive other dimension.

I'm not saying that even the best graphics available right now floor me anywhere near as much as beams of sunlight cascading through a forest canopy while I take a breath of cool morning mist, feel the breeze, and listen to eight completely separate species of birds sing their calls at once, or anything. I don't think it'll be too much longer before virtual experiences will reach the point to which I won't be able to say that with such confidence though, which makes now an exciting time. We get to watch the complexity of technology accelerate at a speed more immense than ever before.

I guess that basically all I'm saying is that when I play games, I'm constantly thinking of how totally fucking extremely mind bogglingly ridiculous it is that I live in a reality where games like we have today even exist for me to play. I think that concludes my rant. FOR NOW.

I can appreciate it to some extent, but mostly it seems like a whole lotta work and resources for something that will probably never rival the human imagination, but it could possibly subvert it.  I can see the benefit of technology in some sense but I can't help but feel like it hasn't made us any happier, closer to eachother, or more in tune with our environment.  Maybe even the opposite.

I can't argue that the work and resources expended to create all our modern gadgetry is ethically justifiable; I don't think it is. So I agree with you there. The suffering that the same amount of time, effort, and money could have prevented had it been utilized differently is unimaginable. It'd be great if we could at least make sure everyone had enough food to eat and water to drink before shifting our gaze to creating fucking seven generations of iPhones.

If nothing else, I think our society is a testament of the ethnocentrism and widespread moral confusion to which all of us are subject on at least some level. So I guess if we're sort of just speaking generally about making the world as a whole a better place for everyone, the obvious solution is to propagate more accessible and higher quality education. That's something that technology no doubt has played and continues to play a major role in enhancing.

As for rivaling the human imagination- I don't think it should necessarily aim to. It's a product of the human imagination, as I see it.  I'm not saying that technology doesn't have its downsides, I think that it does. So I also agree with you there somewhat. I can also see how the use of technology may sometimes subvert imagination, though I think that when properly understood it's much more likely to empower imagination. Electronic music, as a whole, is a decent example. Deciding whether technology is ultimately good or bad I think is, as is oftentimes the case, a matter of weighing the benefits against the consequences. Those are murky waters to swim. Since it's clear that it's here to stay, my stance is that the best course of action is to try to appreciate it for what it is: a marvel of cooperative human ingenuity; and to try to use it honestly and for positive things.

The dude who started Netscape led a $75 million round of funding for Oculus the other day.
Quote:

We believe Oculus will not only alter the gaming landscape but will redefine fundamental human experiences in areas like film, education, architecture, and design. Oculus is at the tip of the iceberg of its potential, and we’re incredibly excited to help them change the world,” said Andreessen in a statement.

I think the amount of high profile support this is getting is as close to a guarantee of its success as you can ask for.

Check out the Avegant Glyph. Looks like the Rift finally has potential competition.

It doesn't have the huge field of view like the Rift, but it's method of projecting light directly on to your retinas sounds futuristically appealing and the design looks pretty clever.

I was gonna make a new post about this, but I searched the forums and saw this thread so I'll just bump it. I'm excited for the consumer version to come out. Just think of playing this game while tripping. There's tons of developers creating trippy games for people like us and it's just so amazing. I'm actually thinking of buying a DK2.

Oh so that's Sightline! I read about that but I hadn't seen it yet. Looks neat for sure. Nice, I strongly considered buying one when they first came out. At this point I think I'ma hold out til the the consumer version though.

Have you seen Soundself?

now combine this with omnidirectional treadmills and motion detection (and affordability..) and bam... 10,000,000 obese gamers healed.

Shit would be so fun they wouldn't care they're getting tired and would be so tired of sucking from being fat they'd play enough to become super fit

The only thing i'd worry about with using it for games where things get intense is rapid head movement back and forth. Like i can definitely see people playing games where they have to look in different directions kind of fast and hurting their neck. That being said I would love to give it a try for games like skyrim.

Imagine the new GTA first person with the rift

Imagine DayZ with the Oculus and the Virtuix Omni, that would be awesome. If there was a way to link it with a gun control so that the Oculus can register where the gun is pointing, it would be even better. The future of gaming is bright.

Imagine this with one of those brain ball games:

Not the brain ball game itself, but just using the technology in the headsets. You could create some really unique games using a oculus rift, a brain wave attachment and some other things.

This is something different.
The one I think you are thinking about was a tech demo using battlefield 3, with haptic feedback (being shot) and some weird treadmill setup in a big ass room.

This new tech is freaking awesome.
I would probably play more games than I do now and slim up quit a bit.

This just in! Pretty sweet. They already acquired Carbon Design, the guys responsible for the 360 controller, back in June I think.

I really wanna pull the trigger on an oculus...but I really can't justify spending $700 for a product thats gonna have a newer and far superior model in 6 months to a year and only get better from there. Tis like 3 weeks pay for me. :feelsbadman:

"I have no way of knowing whether you, who eventually will read this record, like stories or not. If you do not, no doubt you have turned these pages without attention. I confess that I love them. Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."
