Think I might have sterilized my sub 1

Wait, let me rephrase that. I sterilized my coir/verm sub. Loaded it into jars, put em in the AA 75x, and sterilized them at 19-20 psi for 70 min. Sub came out black. Looked like compost
I know your all thinking
Well my reasons are this. I have now seen a lot of posts by RR saying that sterilizing coir is fine. I have also read a few posts by old school TC's saying that they used sterilized coir as a casing material. However despite this I have yet to see what happens when you do this for myself. So here it is;

Sub was spawned a week ago. Thinking about tossing it into fruiting conditions soon, maybe tonight. Lets all see what happens.
Got a few more of these in the works, about a day behind. After this I will try a few more of these periodically. Can't wait to see what happens. For me sterilizing in my AA 75X is a lot less hassle than in my pot on the stove. Can run a lot more jars this way, and it keeps me out of the kitchen and thus my wife happy.
Comments and discussion welcome

Think you might have sterilized? Oh, you sterilized it
Sterile coir works fine. I just pasteurize everything to be on the safe side, my house is old.

So is mine, and I got insane dogs that shed like mad. Shit I saw a hair in my galindoi LC the other day However I'm pretty confident this will go off no problem but, you never see people sterilize coir. I figure it might be nice to do a grow or two to publicly take away some of the stigma (or to show why its a bad practice, depends how this turns out).
That being said these are pretty small tubs, just in case my filthy house gets the better of me, I didn't want to commit a lot of spawn.

I'm thinking bout using it in my snakes hidebox instead of moss. I always have lots on hand. Regardless if I can convince myself that this is acceptable, doubt I will use my stove again

Well the first two mini tubs I tried this with are showing pins. Two more mini mono's are right behind. Spawned another 66 quart mono last night with sterilized coir. So far, my filthy old house full of dog hair has not proven to be an issue yet. Too soon to say if this may become a standard practice for me going forward but, up until now I like what I see.

I've wondered about this. Looking good.
In some ways, sterilizing seems easier than pasteurizing.
Did you pack your jars? Or did just smack the bottom a little to kinda settle it down? What was your recipe and how many jars did it take?

I packed the fuck outta them. I sterilized these at 20 psi for about 70 min. Came out black, like compost. Sub was about 70% coir 30% verm. Just loaded up 14 quarts and sterilized them in one go. Started using foil and jar rings on the jars after van der griegen suggested that it would help keep the moisture locked in as I was finding they would be a little dry after the sterilization. But I am finding sterilization to be a lot easier than pasteurization. Plus it keeps me outta the kitchen, the wife don't like me in the kitchen doing mushroom stuff.
These little tubs were 1.5 quarts spawn and 3 quarts sub. I like to use them for my off tek experiments, clone testing, and ms grows.

Well it don't look like much yet, just starting to take off. I only inoculated it a week ago and its pretty slow. Might actually start another one if it don't start to get some better growth soon. Probably does not help that my house is a little chilly this time of year and its not on a stir plate or nothing, just have a bolt in it and I stir it with a magnet.
Anyway this is a bit off topic.

Well these pins are looking pretty good IMO got some decent ones showing up in one of the tubs that was a week behind and the other week behind tub has got some pretty decent primordia startin up. Here's a nice little look at the tubs in front.
Tub 1:

Tub 2:

The other 66 quart tubs I have spawned with sterilized coir seem to be doing pretty good so far. I'm pretty close to give up on pasteurization unless I'm using something other than coir/verm. Still not 100% sold yet but so far it seems that a simple coir verm sub is pretty much impossible to fuck up if ya got clean spawn.

I just spawned some sterilized CVG with coffee soaked WBS. I'll post results here.

Did you soak the grains in coffee/water mix to hydrate them, or did you dunk the colonized grains in coffee/water?

coffee soaked to hydrate, then sterilized, then inoculated with agar.
Grain dunking in coffee would likely spell disaster.

Well so far so good, I'm seeing a nice progression from these tubs, but I'm not seeing green. So far me like. Tub one really looks nice with tub 2 not far behind. 3 and 4 got some nice little pins creeping in as well.
Tub 1

Can't wait to see SBJ's tests
