Yeah the price of fresh veggies is crazy. Tried to do a garden this year and it was a fail except for the potatoes and tomatoes. Got carrots that look mutated and some of my corn was actually POPPED on the stalk! F'ing nutz!

I live right next door. They have the cities best fish selection and their meat is good. I can grab a six pack of beer in one minute and be back home. Convenience.

Don't forget the broccoli. (no wonder you can't pay off that $350,000.  I live within a few blocks of AFC the natural foods store I worked at for 19+ years.  The food rocks and the prices are good and I'm known by all inside.

Thanks for paying attention about the student loans - they're probably more like 400,000 now - I haven't looked in a couple years.

I do all the grocery shopping and cook everything so I really do a bit of whimsical stuff, though I try to keep it simple and healthy.  But I like buying stuff from Amazon. My sister got me prime so I buy cases of NOH Hawaiian BBQ sauce, Grade A Maple syrup from Vermont, saffron, coffee, halvah, and Carbons brand waffle mix. As a chef by trade I inspect each unit of product on its own merits.

Even if the broccoli wasn't 7 bucks a head it would have sucked anyway. It was a bit dry and slightly rubbery. I got a head of Green Giant from Walmart yesterday and it was individually wrapped and though the outer corona of the head was a bit broken it still was fresher than at WF. It cost $2.39

If you  live in a city with a whole foods, surely there must be an ethnic grocer.

I got 4 bags of produce for $34 yesterday at my local asian grocer.

-7 peppers (half undersized) $1
-Butternut/acorn squash  $.29lb
-2 large clam shells of baby tomatos $1.50
-4 limes $.50
-5 lemons $.50
-3 avocados $.69 each
-2 heads of spinach $1.29 each
-mini zuchinni $.29 lb
-1 bag of chopsuey - $1
-1 package of basil - $1.50
-1 package of crimini mushrooms - $1.29
-Celery $1.50
etc. etc.

I spend less than $40/week (for 2), eat like a king, and stuggle to carry all of the food to my car, by myself.

Best place ever to shop - not looking forward to moving out of the city and having to shop at chain grocers again.

Seriously, if your in a city, check out the ethnic stores.

Dem's good prices. I am afraid that in Uptown New Orleans we're a bit out of the way for ethnic groceries. All of ours our across that dirty water.

Fair enough.

Whole foods is entirely unaffordable - Are there other options?

Shit man I spend on average $500 a month at Amazon.  I think I spend only about $20 a day on food. I eat very well on that.

Yeah. We just buy their frozen broccoli florets. They're organic and they're 2 bucks and change for a pound.

Veggies aren't as cheap as junk food, but they have nutrients that keep you healthy. Veggies aren't subsidized by the govt like corn.

When it comes to shopping, you got to shop around. I'm poor but I eat good by growing a lot myself and buying affordable organic staples.

And be sure to check local Farmer's markets. If there is one near you go towards the end of their "day" as you're more likely to be able to haggle down to a good price. Speaking of haggling, if you're American like I am, you probably don't have a haggling bone in your body but START DOING IT because it can save you money.

Fortunately we have a My Organic Market and Trader Joes in our area. I only go to Whole Foods if I'm looking for a particular cheese or when I want to pick up a huge block of 3lb 85% butter fat butter. I regret nothing. Organic fruits and veggies are going to be more expensive and I try to avoid GMO's if I can help it. But if you don't care about any of this, than as someone else mentioned the Indian/Korean/Asian markets are where it is at. Exotic produce, great prices, and tantalizing selections...these places can be a food lover's dream.

Also don't be afraid to try a little foraging. Green onion, mint, purslane, and fresh dandelion greens make great late spring/summer foods and are FREE.

Free is my favorite price.

whole foods prices are crazy.  much of their stuff is not actually whole foods, more like processed GMOs at extortionate rates.  much of their produce is conventionally grown (so GMOs for things where this applies), but just leagues more expensive.  Too bad it is the most convenient for you.  I live nowhere near the side of town with a Whole Foods any longer, but I live in the hood, a real food desert, so nothing is convenient except corner markets for candy and chips and beer and cigs.  But +1 for ethnic grocers, if they are anywhere nearby.  I am too far from any good asian or indi-paki or mexican, etc markets these days, sadly.  The best option for me is busing with a transfer or 2 each way, to get to a big chain grocery.  meh.

long live gardening.  do more.  learn as you go.
get better at gardening and get into seed exchange programs.  gardenweb is probably the most active.  also see sites like wintersowing for small amts of free seeds.
find any community gardening in your area (or urban farming).  some that sell items (other than just rent plots) will sometimes let people volunteer for free food, where you can also learn more tech.

Frozen broccoli tastes like wet cardboard to me. :tongue2:  It's fresh or forget about it.
