Mycelium Senescence - Peer-Reviewed Literature?
    #19222536 - 12/03/13 02:41 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey there,

I'm having a hard time finding peer-reviewed literature regarding senescence in mycelium spawn? More specifically for Oysters...

My friend has been expanding his oyster culture for >1 year, and he keeps doing so. I told him he should fruit it and expand with a fresh cell line, but he won't buy it without peer-reviewed material.

Well, you cannot expand the same culture forever.....I usually only do about 4 g2g transfers and then fruit before I start over.

he's just been adding unpasteurized coffee for >1 year, bit by bit. seems like a lot of cell division/mutagenesis/possible senescence should have occurred by now, but he doesn't think it's significant enough to take into consideration. Again, pleurotus ostreatus is the species in question. I figure senescence rates might be species-specific?

my friend understands the science behind it all, but he believes that the difference in yield would be negligible after "only" ~1 year of uninterrupted cell division.

I know. He's a newb, but I can attest that his culture is strong and healthy. I suspect his substrate is full of competitors as a result, which would reduce his yields, but he doesn't care. His culture looks pretty good, and he has been using 100% spent coffee grains, so the only pasteurization they get is via the making of the coffee. The only reason he succeeded is because he started with a sterile kit sold at the grocery store which he used as spawn...He gave me a culture, I've been doing the same, and it doesn't contaminate...it's pretty hardy, I gotta give it that.

I'll see what I can do here, but let's stay on track, because part of me is curious. Is there any peer reviewed literature regarding the relationship between spawn age and yield, preferably with species-specific information?
