Spawn Bag Questions!
    #19219653 - 12/02/13 09:45 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So I ordered a pre-sterlized rye spawn bag from everythingmushrooms! Looks pretty cool, I put about 3 cc of B+ spore solution from a syringe into it.

Now, it came in this little nifty box here,

and from what I understand about everythingmushroom's spawn bags is that the GE comes from that little white fabric on top. My first question is; will the bag colonize normally with the top folded up like this?

also, if thats ok for the bag to colonize, would it be ok to leave it in the box and taped up like this?

the fabric is directly under the whole shown in the picture, in the middle of the flaps of the box. So the air will be getting in. This is the first time I've used a spawn bag, so sorry if my questions are stupid to some of you.

P.S. Ive been searching for a good thread or tek on how to sterlize using boiling water and steam. I found some information here, but maybe im not typing in the right key words, I need to know how long and effective it is using the pftek. Some people say its effective and some dont, how about some opinions from those who have tried it? or maybe a link leading to a thread or information on it.

Thanks!

Also, the reason im asking this, is because it would save a hell of a lot of space. i could just stack these bags in boxes in my closet so they are out of the way and what not.

The bag will inflate during colonization, its fine to put it in rolled up..just let it allow gas exchange once its inflating.when ive ordered bags i always store em in the box they came in as well.

Im not sure i understand this question.. are you asking about boiling brf jars without a pc? If so just boil em in a few inches of water fr 90 min or so..

I've always been told that the bags need to be filled with fresh air or else they'll stall, and this is what I do when making my own bags. Not sure if it's necessary or not if the previous poster said it works for him, but if you wanna put air in it just hold it up by the top and air should be pulled in through the filter patch. It might take while so you may want to tape it to a coathanger and just let it hang there for awhile.

When mine get inflated i squeeze the co2 out of the fliter patch and let it fill up again.. and pulling the sides will draw fresh air into the bag like krypto stated..

If you're trying to sterilize your own grains in the future, boiling water and steaming it in a pot will take about 8 hours...

You're going to need a pressure cooker for your grains, 90 mins 15 psi. If you want to just do half pint BRF cakes you could steam sterilize, but it looks like you want to just go bulk?

Its been about a week now with no sign of growth. Patience is key, i know, but is it possible that it stalled bc i didnt get fresh air in it right away? And if so, could i just put a couple cc's more solution in it and try it again? Or should i just toss the bag out?

Also, no local pharmecies will sell me 16 guage needles for my spore syringe after i foolishly tossed out the needle it came with. However, i am allowed to purchase the small diabetes syringes. Would it be ok to just simple stick the diabetes syringe into the spore syringe (after wiping the needle down with alcohol wipes of course) and taking some of the solution out via the little diabetes syringe, then inoculating using the smallr syringe? Or is that too risky? Would the needle be too narrow for the spores?

Don't inoculate again.

I dont believe i let the needle cool off much after inoculating. Could this have killed any spores being ejected? Thus, leaving my spawn bag empty of spores?

No, some spores would still get through.. the first drop to pass through the syringe cools the needle, and theres tons of spores in the fluid..

Bags don't need a ton of gas exchange. Actually to much ge can cause early fruiting. Which is why some go for 2 micron vs 5.

Below you'll see a crappy pic of how I colonize bags. The top is rolled down past the filter patch, yet myc is growing just fine.

Then i wonder whats wrong.. Perhaps it gets cold in my closet, where its at. Causing it to stall

You're at a week... have some patience. It can take up to 3 weeks for spores to germinate.

Youre right, im being impatient, i apologise, just eager.  I kinda shook up the grains yesterday, will this harm the spores?

It won't harm the spores to shake the bag, but it's not a good idea to shake before you see growth. All this does is disperse the spores away from each other, running the chance of an even longer colonization time. Patience, Patience, Patience. Just leave it be, and check every few days. If you don't see growth in three or four weeks, that's when you worry.

---And since you're having trouble finding needles, check with a local farming or agricultural depot. If there is an "Equity" in your town, they might have a connected supply store that sells needles and syringes that are used for cattle. They are usually very inexpensive, too.

Thank you for being so reassuring, shroomery's hospitality is an A+. Unlike other forums where beginners are bashed and ridiculed. Im just going to leave it be from now on instead of messin with it every night. This is my first time with a spawn bag, is there any simple bulk teks that you recomend? Or should i just take the whole block out once its 100% and do it like a cake in a fc?

You can try my bucket tek in my sig, since it looks like theres not really enough spawn to do a monotub.

I suggest using coir and verm, as they are really easy to find and are pretty contam resistant
