king oyster substrate when you can't get sawdust or cottonseed.

Because I'm having trouble finding hardwood sawdust (we are pine obsessed here) I was thinking I'd try king oyster on straw next but then I read this post:
http://www.shroomery.org/9407/Pleurotus-eryngii
It says that yields are not so good on wheat straw alone. Adding cotton seed meal can improve it but I have no fricken idea where I could get that from, I'd probably have to go to a health food shop and pay a fortune. Could I supplement it with wheatgerm that is easy to get or something else that's easy to get?
Thanks guys.

Wheat bran is usually easy to come by at health food stores and generally isn't much money. Our local store is really helpful in ordering and much as we need in bulk.

I've had great yields and monster fruits with with plain pasteurized straw, and get away with not supplementing by using a higher grain spawn ratio...doesnt get much easier than that!

You can do it on straw, but not all strains fruit well. If you give it a shot, be sure to spawn very heavily. These were grown on straight straw with a high spawn rate...

Yes I agree awesome picture, for a bag that size how much grain spawn would be considered heavy? I only have little jars (approx 250ml or a cup).

Yeah, sorry. I should have defined what I meant by "heavy." The straw log pictured had a spawn rate of about 15%. I've noticed that if we use any less spawn, the logs tend to contam and/or the fruits are substantially smaller in size.

I've had some luck using 10-20% horse hay as supplement. Its actually cheaper than straw in VT. Initial tests look good. Going to run some side by side comparisons after the holidays.

Nice! I'd love to see your results. I've only ever tried alfalfa as a supp, and I think I used too much because the log went crazy green.

Buckeye is the only person I've seen do well with alfalfa but his king straw logs are ridiculous. Never seen kings look like those monsters
