Synthetic filter discs specs?
    #19214811 - 12/01/13 09:20 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Things are advancing well with this new try at growing mushrooms: after a couple of transplants I have some clean cultures in petri dishes, so I'll be posting an update this week after sterilizing the grain jars (the grain is soaking right now) and doing the agar transfers of both the Equador and the Galindoi I have at the moment.

This time I'll be using polyfill as a filter for my jars (basically because that's what I have at the moment), but I've also been doing some research to see if I can get some of those synthetic filter discs in my area (I'm planning ahead of time for the next batch).
I started to check and I have found so many different specs for so many different kinds of filters that I'm officially lost.

After reading some threads on the forums, I can conclude that the 3 important variables to look for are the MATERIAL the filter is made of, the filter PORE SIZE, and the TEMPERATURE it can stand.

So, regarding material, the disc should not be made from paper, cellulose or anything organic (because that would lead to a contamination problem, right?).  The problem is that I've found Anodisc filters, Hydrophilic Filters, Nitran filters, Optitran filters, Westran filters, WNYL filters, Nylon filters and that's from ONE single vendor! Heck, I even find a Tek on EasyFelt.

So, my 1st question is which materials are good to look for?

Regarding the filter's pores size, after a quick research I found out that fungus spores are between 0.5 and 0.30 microns, so...
Second question is: any synthetic filter disc with a pore size of 4 microns and under shoud work fine, am I correct?
0.2 microns is prefered I read somewhere.

Finally, regarding temprature, since the pressure inside the PC is higher, the filter discs should be able to maintain it's properties (ie: pore size) above the temperature of boiling water.  At 15psi, the temperature within the PC should be around 120 C (around 250 F), so...
Last question: any filter with a maximun temperature of more than 120 C should work, right?

Once again, thanks a lot to you guys for the great answers and help.
I'll post an update soon in the original Equador+Galindoi thread as soon as I sterilize the jars (that I'll do tomorrow) and I do the agar transfers!
I'm really excited about this!!!  :stayfunky:

Just order these, cut them into circles, and silicone them to a 1/8" or 1/4" hole in your lid

I do exactly what frank does but man cutting out those little circles is a real pain in the ass. That's why I make my wife do it

My problem ordering online is that stores are usualy in the US (or even further away, in the EU), so ussually the shipping cost is more than the cost of the goods.  Tha's why I'm so adamant when it comes to try to buy everything locally. It doesn't make any sense to me to spend $20 on a set of 10 discs that cost $12 or something similar.

However, luck seems to be smiling my way lately, and a friend of mine might coming to visit for the holidays. If that's the case, he'll bring me some discs and I'll be set!
Thanks for the link FrankHorrigan! I'll be using it when this friend comes.

I thought international delivery was expensive, but the guys at MS have just surprised me beyond what I thought possible: $25 in goods, almost $160 in shipping... That's why I try to go local as much as possible, and take the time and effort in finding out things.
