That's thread with the pans on grains was amazing! Why aren't we all doing this? A cased grain pan tray would go perfect in my greenhouse!

Cubes grow on anything, would cased grains work for other dung lovers or wood lovers that can be grown indoors?

I have seen pans grown on cased grains and they did excellent. I tried to duplicate it and failed. I now believe that the problem lay in the weakening of the fragile pan myc network without having anything to colonize after. With V tek I am sure I will succeed. Gonna put a few pan spores to agar soon and giver another shot. It has been well documented that varieties in section mexicana will also fruit off cased grains. I have a feeling that they would not only thrive in a V tek setting, but that the stones could gain some potency due to the long invitro period. Just a hunch, but one I will be acting on :awesomenod:

Pasty, I am working on that right now.  I have Pan Cyan and Pan Camb Goliath right now trying to colonize rice from MS.  The Pan Cyan failed completely on first attempt, but I am doing another run as well as getting a good colonization on agar to transfer over and see if that helps.  If the Pan Cyan fails again I am going to go from agar to both brown rice and rye berry side by side to see if I can colonize.  My Pan Camb Goliath is doing very well right now, but I am worried about contam as it seems to be doing TOO WELL, but Pans do grow fast.

I got a bunch of MS syringes so I tried direct to grain first, but am now following up with agar isolations now to at least get good clean growth.  My agar plates are disappearing SO FAST.  Already eaten 40 or so.  Must make some slants soon.

I wish I was as good of logger as you to keep people up to date on it, but so far I have done lots of growing and very little fruiting so I guess I will wait for a fuller picture.  I am kind of expecting some abject failure.

Pasty I'm sorry for going OT alil bit. Just say the word pasty and I'll start a new thread for this. I looked and couldn't really find the answer I'm looking for. Idk if its because I'm tired or just gone :derp:.

Anyways what kind of soil do you guys use for the pan grows. I didn't think stuff like the jiffy mix would work with the pans.

What kind of soil are you using for v tek she says "Sifted potting soil, peat moss with 3-8% garden lime, and mixes like "Jiffy Mix" and cactus soil work very well."

Ok well I live near a grow shop and have access to A LOT of different organic soils all with different ingredients. To me just saying "potting soil" is retarded. I need to know more details like am I looking for something akin to miracle grow (which I would never let anywhere near me ever I hate the vile evil company that is "Scotts") or can I just scoop some dirt out of the ground, pasteurize, and case. OR should I use something like the jiffy mix maybe with worm castings, bat gueno, or whatever.

See what I'm saying? There is endless possibilities, and I'm not knowledgeable enough to make that call on which would work. I'm probably over thinking this like I usually do.

I'm only looking for a short answer or a link. So I don't completely jack this thread. (too late)

Thanks guys.

i managed a handfull a few months ago, not much of a success but i think most of my problems were coming when i broke my sub up to put into trays, the recovery is much longer then something like cubes, it took about 50 days just to get fully colonized and another 14 for my casing and another 20 before a few pins popped up..pain in the ass for 7 fruits and 20 qt's  and around ten failures later lol

Hey, that's 7 more fruits that I could ever grow...
And I've tried it more than ten times, believe me.
Do you have a link for the thread and/or pictures?
You don't see semilanceata growing indoors often, that's for sure.

Well magic I just used potting soil that has no added fertilizers and a little verm. I did sift it to get out the large chunks and the perlite. Finally got some hydrated lime so I plan on trying cactus mix soon. Not sure what your topsoil is like in your area so its hard to say how it would work for you. I have even had a pretty good run casing with coir and verm, just need to apply it a bit late and fruit immediatly otherwise the mycelium will just colonize the hell out of it.

The bulk tub for this grow was cased with sterilized coir and verm.

Even if the numbers do works out in the end who wants to wait around for that many flushes to get the yield. Seems like a lot of extra time and work to me

Opportunity for contams to take hold as well - although I sometimes get 5-6 flushes out of bulk minitubs usually it's less, and of course there's the diminishing returns as the sub ages.  More fun (IMHO) to get those big early flushes.
