so whats your guys opinion on this you think one day we will live in a society with a vast underground market selling molecular inks so we could print up some lsd or mdma

have you seen the process of 3d printing at this point? it takes some pretty large equipment and certain software to do. I don't think people are gonna have a printing room in their house for a good while.

I think it would be a lot less straightforward than printing, but then again I better read that vice article.

Industrial 3d printers and shit are big... but they have 3d printers that are of reasonable size, and are easy to operate...

It depends on the drug.  Many syntheses are far more complex than simply mix a, then b and ca.

Interesting idea, but not gonna happen anytime soon. There would be some very wealthy interests that would make sure this wouldn't happen.

Yeah there are some very small and cheap 3d printers. The reason they're not common in homes is not size or cost so much as the fact that there is currently no compelling reason for "average" people to want them. Those are just for plastic parts and stuff though, I'd guess it could easily be decades before a device capable of printing drugs in the home will be affordable.

Wouldn't you need lysergic acid diethylamide ink just to print the same thing?

I'd be happy with just the cartridges

I think the idea is that the "printer" would assemble the molecules from the ground up more or less.

I'm not a chemist by any means, but for a lot of drugs, you can't just stick the molecules together like legos.

fuck 3d printing. how about downloadable drugs? brain-machine-interface will allow for a direct one-click LSD trip from the internet :lsd:

I think before that happens we're going to have surrogate drugs or the ability to directly manipulate brain activity, i.e., get the effect of the drug by manipulating the right neurotransmitters artificially with no actual drugs being taken by the user.

As for the OP
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/143365-3d-printing-cancer-drugs-molecule-by-molecule-using-dna-scaffolds

If it can be done for cancer drugs, it could theoretically be done for any drugs.

I think drugs are the way you manipulate these things.

YEAH that's what i'm talking about. i have this idea for a "memory jog" device. sort of how like autocorrect works on your cellphone. or how certain websites can remember your browsing history and present advertising representative of it..

anyway, there would be a program/algorithm that recognizes when certain neurotransmitters are fired, or when certain electrochemical activity is taking place. through repetition, the algorithm would learn to recognize the patterns of activity, and make associations with other things it was taught to run.

so like for example, theoretically, you could hook up to a BMI device, the program would recognize your brain activity, and respond in certain ways to certain brain activity.

so like, you could just think "shroomery.org", and the webpage would appear on the screen. or you could think of a song "on top of old smokey", and it'll look that song up on the internet and start playing it/

eventually this technology would be so advanced, that you can directly "plug in" to the internet, and have the whole experience in your head or behind your eyelids. you'll be able to download programs directly into your brain (including "consciousness altering" programs, like drug trips), and also be able to generate responses from machines that are only connected to your brain.

this technology already exists, but on a very basic level. we have BMI machines that WORK. very basic, but the implications are practically endless.

i can't wait until more people jump on the BMI bandwagon and start getting more into cognitive/computer sciences.
