Mushroom identity?
    #19218212 - 12/02/13 04:58 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I'm new to Shroomery.org and I found this mushroom with a purple colored stem and gills. The stem is somewhat coarse about 3/4 inch in diameter, the top is shaped somewhat like a old school drawing of a UFO. The gills on the top are inset from the bottom of the cone a little more than 1/16 of an inch the diameter of the bell is approximately 2 and 5/8 inches in diameter and stands about 3 and 3/8 inches tall. The top is a tan brown almost a carmel color

It might be something close to Clitocybe nuda, or maybe Cortinarius violaceus. What is the spore color and smell?

Possibly Lepista nuda. Where did you find it, what habitat?

I live in Seattle WA and it was growing in my front yard in the grass near a wood flower box and power pole.

If the spore print was pink it would indicate Lepista nuda. If it is reddish brown it would indicate Cortinarius violaceus. But I'm almost sure it's Lepista nuda on account of the smooth cap.

I don't think Cortinarius violaceus grows in grass.

If it is growing in grass, it is likely Lepista saeva (the field blewit), not L. nuda (the wood blewit). Print would be pinkish white.

The one pictured in my field guide is growing on grass

I'd wait until a TI chimes in, my guide only covers the British Isles and so is incomprehensive, but my money is on wood blewit. It looks very similar to one's I've found. I don't think the fact that it is growing on grass necessarily rules it out.

Spore print would be pale pink in either case. It seems a bit too tall for field blewit and the colours of the cap and gills too deep, but I'm not 100% sure that would rule that out.

I didn't mean to imply that the wood and field blewits have different-looking spore prints, but that the pink might be so pale as to appear white (as with the only blewit I've managed to find so far).
