Nor. Cal. ID help?
    #19218075 - 12/02/13 04:32 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi guys!

I'm new into the world of mushroom hunting and cultivation! Every one said I needed a hobby and now they wish I never started looking!

Anyway onward to the mushrooms!

I'm in the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada mountains around 2000ft elevation.

Species #1;

First up are these rather large guys which I'm guess are Oysters? I've spent several hours digging through Mushrooms demystified but second opinions are golden.

Habitat: Mid sized dead oak tree in more or less direct sunlight. Type of oak was indeterminable to me as it had no branches nor leaves left.

Gills: The gill color varies from a off white to slight brown depending on size/age.

Stem: Whitish, strong and spongy.

Cap: Brown - light brown and smooth. Smallest measured roughly 8cm across and the largest was easily 25cm.

Spore print color:  White with a small hint of grey or lilac purple.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Odor: Not strong but distinct odor, it's hard to explain kind of pungent but not necessarily bad.

Location: 1700~ ft Elevation Sierra Nevada foot hills Surrounded by a sea of blackberries.

There was roughly 5-6x as much as I took left at various ages. They grew in clumps tightly packed one on top of the other.

Species #2

Up next we have these little guys, I found them growing on heavily decomposed oak wood much around the same place as the above mushrooms. Unfortunately I only have one picture of the little thing. I've spent hours and hours trying to identify it but I'm completely stumped.

Location:  Same as above.

Habitat : Decomposing oak pieces, partial sunlight Growing alone, not in clumps

Cap: Springy latext-eqsue  - brown - light brown 5-7cm plane to depressed.

Gills: Well formed - pale brown. Does not fork nor secrete any liquid when cut.

Stem : Short, gilled until the last 1-2cm. Slight white fuzz, strong but not chalk like. Center - off center.

Spore print: White to my surprise.

Species #3;

And last but not least my dad want's to know what this little guy is. I'm inclined to believe it's an ink cap?

Habitat: Very soggy corner of our field by an irrigation outlet

Gills: Dark brown perhaps even black on the largest.

Stem: Yellow with little white spots.

Cap: Yellow and slimy no more than 3cm abroad.

That's it for now! If there's anyway I could make my post clearer or my pictures better please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
-Torm

The first ones look like oysters to me.
The second ones may be a Clitocybe.
I think the third might is a Bolbitius species.

After some research they do quite look like Bolbitius titubans/vitellinus.
Guess I'll try to get him to make a spore print.

Cheers,
Torm
