Old pines edible?
    #19218171 - 12/02/13 04:49 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I found a bunch of Pines.
Being greedy I don't want to throw out any that might be ok.
One (about 10"-12" across) is starting to turn brown on the gills and the cap is upturned. The whole mushroom is softer than the others but when washed, there is lots of firm meat.
Is it risky to eat older ones?

What do they smell like? I wouldn't eat them until you know for certain what they are...
What color are the spores?
They might be Tricholoma magnivelare.

Are you asking what they are, or asking if it's okay to eat the old ones?
I'm confused.

I wouldn't eat anything that is starting to decay, and by the sound of it your's are. In general, if you wouldn't buy it in a store then you shouldn't eat it. If it were just a little bug eaten, though, then it would be safe enough to eat.

BTW, I'm not making any attempt to ID your mushrooms here, and I wouldn't eat anything unless I was 100% sure what they were.

I have no concern with the ID thanks.(That smell is unmistakable for one.) It's a familiar patch & I've hunted for 35 years, but very productive this year!
It's just about how old is still good.

Well I'll have to trust you on the ID then, you have a lot more experience than me. But if you really have to ask if they're fresh enough I think that says a lot. If you're not 100% sure they're fresh then don't eat them, you don't want to risk getting food poisoning.

yeah the ones on the edges i bet are pretty ripe, stick your nose up in them and inhale deeply.  Catch that dirty fish odor and throw them out.  Mushrooms fall to bacteria really fast at that stage, and I don't like diarrhea, so I wouldn't eat them ones on the edges.  Those smaller ones inside look delicious though.

Dammit, I want to find some matsutake, maybe next year.
