Are these copelandia cyans?
    #1921803 - 09/16/03 04:21 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys, its me again, and hopefully today I have finally found something good, although I am very skeptical and don't really think I have. Anway.

I found them in my buddies horse pasture, growing on horse dung of course. The gills aren't really black, more of a grey color, although one specimens gills are signifacntly darker than the others. The gills do not seem to be attached to the stem at all. I am in tennessee and  we had a really hard rain about 2 days ago so I thought it would be a good time to look for some pans. Anyway, here are the pics. I dont have a sporeprint yet, but I know it will black since these are definately pans of some sort, right? Anyway, thanks a lot guys  The thing that worries me the most, although I havent had the specimens long, I dont see any bluing reaction. Thern again I dont really know about copes bluing habits.

Wait for one of the moderators to be sure on the ID,but there should be blueing on the stem and cap. Is there a partial veil present? Check out MushroomJohns web site for great detailed info and good pics.Of course looks can be deceiving. Is your location right for Copelandia cyans? I know your close to the right location but...?
Hope you get a good ID! Being in Alaska myself I am always keeping my eyes open for everything that could be here not just whats been found here. It's a small world after all huh?? Good luck!

Those are Panaeolus antillarum. Not active, growing from dung.

Also a question for you GGreatOne234, how did you ID hese from cope cyans? Just the lack of the blue bruising, or are there any other signs to look for?

yes i agree with Panaeolus antillarum, also could be P. semiovatus but look at them they are P. antillarum come on.

anyway here is a pic of Copelandia cyanescens for you. they are much less bulky, more fragile, with thinner flesh, darker gills, and have a darker cap with brownish/grayish tones, but still lighter than P. campanulatus etc.

nice find, they look really neat. i hope to find some even though they are not active.
also, C. cyanescens basially dont grow that far north.

Yes, I was aware that my stems where a bit thicker than most of the speciamens found in the southern US region. Some of those that mjshroomer has on his site are even thicker than mine tho, but they are from hawaii. Anyway, thanks for the pic, I was really looking for subbs in his field but I remembered that cope cyans were white with black gills, thats really all I knew about 'em, so I figured, might as well give it a shot

Also, what is the difference in copelandia and pan? I have heard them used interchangeably, are they the same group of shrooms, or two seperate species?

You most likely will never (ever) find Copelandia cyanescens growing in Tennessee.

Panaeolus Antillarums have very bright white caps, and thicker stronger stems;

Copelandia cyanescens have more variation in color on the caps, sometimes greyish almost silver, sometimes a manila almost orangish color to the caps. And their stems are much more delicate.

Keep shroomin,
GG

They look like COpes to me. Atleast the ones that I trip my balls off of that I find in the cow pastures.

Copelandia is a genus sometimes seperated from Panaeolus by certain mycologists. Others combine them under the same genus Panaeolus.

The only real difference is in the name. All copelandias are bluing mushrooms. Not all Panaeolus blue. As seen in the above pictures. When you find the Copelandias you will know.

Growing in manure, bluing is significant all over the mushroom, and black spores in deposit.

F man Im all screwed up now.....Those pics on the top look like Copes to me that I pick from cow manure in Central Florida. I dont check each individual one for bluing but sometimes the gills arent that dark. Sometimes even a greyer color. As far as I know I've eaten and tripped off em good...
