Problem drinking and alcoholism, moderation and cessation...

Okay everyone, two things are exceedingly clear to me:
1) I cannot continue drink like I have been, nor do I wish to 2) There's a mind-numbing amount of misinformation about alcohol dependence out there
I've found I enjoy alcohol more in company and in moderation, but boredom, frustration (I suspect), and a fear of insomnia have rendered me a solitary binge drinker and there have been some EXTREMELY serious consequences occasionally.
So, I figured I'd ask for some peoples' experience and what did or didn't work.
Have you (or has anyone you know) had a burgeoning serious drinking problem, and did you eventually achieve moderation or did you find that you had to eliminate alcohol completely?
It seems to me (and knowing myself) that if I tried total abstinence, I would fall into an all-or-nothing type pattern (AA's statistics--specifically, how the program increases the death rate of its members--seem to imply this).
On the other hand, I don't want to yearn for more every time I drink. I believe its possible to completely change how you feel/what you want in relation to alcohol, but I also realize that if I choose to continue drinking--however much--I will still likely have a "bad night"... just far less often.
TO BE CLEAR, I am not chemically dependent on it and never have been. However, if I quit I would be heavily inclined to return to it during idle times or for sleep.

Okay, thanks for the vote! And yeah, that makes sense--I feel like this all is a symptom more than anything. I just don't want it to become a new stand-alone problem.

Hey bud,
I just skimmed this but I have the same problem. I actually am quitting today, not forever but for a while. I drank my last drink for a while a few min ago and it's interesting to see your post. I try to quit drinking at least once a week but I'm going to really push here and just find something else to occupy my time. Give it a try with me, it'll be good motivation. If you mentioned you were going to try and stop I apologize for missing it. I'm getting ready for work I'll check back later.

OP from all of your posts that you've made during your time here, it's painfully clear you are a poly-drug addict. You aren't addicted to anything specific, you are just addicted to getting fucked up.

Ooooooh man this is tempting to do with you. The fact I'm not immediately agreeing tells me that maybe I need to worse than I thought, however. I promised myself I'd go for a run earlier (actually, in the thread that prompted this one) so I think I'll run to get one last bottle of gin and after that, I'm in.
How long should we quit for? Till xmas, you think?

True and not true. Moreso true with the idleness and disappointment of the last couple years, but it's a lot more complicated than that. And yes, I'm a poly substance abuser but some things I can handle/manage and other things become proper addictions. If anything, just be glad I'm doing something about this before I doom myself to a life of 12-step meetings.

Alcohol is weird. It's everywhere. Nearly everybody drinks and many people are content drinking excessively without realizing they're over-doing it. I used to drink too much. You sound like me kinda. I wasn't physically dependent but I relied on it almost daily to some degree. I'm very moderate now, but to get to this point I quit completely for a while. If you are worried about your alcohol consumption I suggest you do the same. If your habit gets worse you might not ever be able to enjoy alcohol responsibly.

Wow, dude--perfect response! Everything I was looking to find out about. I talked to my second best friend about quitting until Xmas or New Years and he's all for it. With your advice, I'm going to do it.
Do you think I need to quit for longer though? Do let me know if so.
Otherwise, I'm switching (back) to weed, the drug that has pretty much zero downside .
And it is interesting you mention how ubiquitous it is; funny... they sell bottles of this hard drug at nearly every gas station and grocery store. Word.

It depends, I only quit for like 2 or 3 weeks and it was enough to change my attitude towards the drug. If you no longer care about it or feel like something's missing than you've probably abstained long enough
Maybe
Lol I don't know.
It's probably not good to switch habits but weed is way better than booze if used daily.
Good luck!

i've wanted to completely quit drinking more and more lately... i recently got in trouble for something i didn't actually do and was on probation for a week until it was dropped. but i was actually happy about not being allowed to drink with the fear of a year in jail as a consequence...
i still go to bars and shit, i just save a lot of money now and still play pool smoke bud on the patios and still have fun... although, i would like to get in a relationship with someone else who doesn't drink but that is probably a pipedream and i'm looking at being single until i leave college...

I went through a phase where I was drinking too much (like 6-8 beers a day) for almost a year.
I now drink moderately and not all the time. I no longer consider my drinking to be a problem. I only drink after work now and I work 3pm-11pm so I drink like 2-3 drinks after work before bed, which I consider fine for me.
Kratom was the best solution for me. I quit drinking during the day and replaced it with kratom. Much healthier and more functional. You can easily go to work on kratom with no problem but go to work drunk and its not good.
Etizolam (1-2 mg a day not more than 3 times a week) can also be a good way to replace alcohol.

Moderation doesn't work for me. I am finally aware that I'm a full blown alcoholic. I've tried moderation in the past with some success, but sooner or later, I get completely blasted, often first thing in the morning and for days on end.
Every ones different, and I know people that can take it or leave it, and some of these guys have been drinking as long as me. They just don't seem to have that addictive personality that I have.
My suggestion? Take a break for as long as you can, try not to drink in the morning (working night shift might be an acceptable exception to that), and try not to drink alone. Stick with the weed if you're happy with it. Weed really helps reduce my desire to drink, but my docs tell me I'm just substituting one drug for another. Besides, NJ has the most restrictive MMJ laws in the country, except for those poor fucks where it's still illegal.
I didn't think I was an alcoholic until I tried to reduce my consumption levels significantly about 2 years ago. I ended up hospitalized for a week in an induced coma so they could deal with my severe withdraw, DT's, internal bleeding and ulcers.
You're still young, I wish you well, but be careful, alcohol is very addictive, a known poison, and it doesn't care who it hurts.
