A string of raids have been carried out across Cumbria as police launched an operation targeting so-called “legal highs”.
Police officers taking part in Operation Burdock in Penrith
Drugs and cash were seized as a countywide crackdown got underway to try and break up a market in substances that police say often contain class B drugs such as mephedrone.
Homes were targeted with search warrants after police took hold of details of people suspected of buying these substances over the internet with a view to supplying them.
Detective Sergeant Jason Priestley said: “Officers on the back of that have decided to take positive action and a number of search warrants have been executed over the county as part of Operation Burdock.”
Among the houses targeted in early morning raids was a home at Larch Close in Penrith.
Uniformed officers and police in plain clothes were deployed to a semi-detached house at a modern cul-de-sac at daybreak.
Arriving in marked and unmarked cars, they knocked on the door before being allowed in.
Officers were seen to enter a shed in the back garden and at one point a policeman examined a Ford Mondeo on the drive, checking the boot and appearing to check under the seats.
Just over an hour after police arrived, a woman with a hoody over her head was brought out in handcuffs and placed into the back of a police van.
Police confirmed a woman in her forties was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply.
Powder was seized, which was due to be tested, along with £6,000 cash. The woman was later released on bail pending further inquiries.
A home was also targeted in Castle Drive, Penrith, along with three others in north Cumbria, including at least one in Carlisle. Five raids were also carried out in west Cumbria.
In the north of the county three other people were interviewed by police on a voluntary basis.
Police say drugs like mephedrone are social “party drugs”, generally used by younger people, and cheaper to buy than cocaine or ecstasy. They have warned those using them are taking a health risk.
Superintendent Mark Pannone said: “Many people think because these drugs are called legal highs that they are safe to take and they are not breaking any law.
“This could not be further from the truth. People cannot be sure what is in them or what effect it could have on them personally.
“Anyone who buys such substances is taking a risk with their heath.”
Detective Chief Inspector Rob O’Connor is overseeing the operation. He said: “People purchase these substances on the internet, thinking they are buying something legal.
“Those who are selling it are only interested in profit, therefore will add a large amount of unknown cheaper adulterants.
“They do not care about those who are buying it, only the money, which funds many other illegal activities.”
DCI O’Connor said tests would be carried out on substances seized.
“As well as taking enforcement action, we have also tried to educate those who have made purchases by personally delivering letters to a number of people,” he added.
Mephedrone has been associated with a number of fatalities nationally and politicians moved to impose a ban in 2010.
Side-effects from mephedrone include nose bleeds, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, blood circulation problems, rashes, anxiety, paranoia, fits and delusions.

Kind of like the prescriptions that the pill-pushing quacks like to stuff down peoples' throats for everything from a toothache to an ass pimple?
