People who think being articulate/large vocab means your smart 2

Horseshit! The smartest people I have ever known were inarticulate, honest, kind-hearted, experienced, prudent individuals, however, lacked a decent vocabulary and so found it exceptionally difficult to get their point across without sounding foolish and ignorant when in fact they knew exactly what they were talking about, but could not devise a perfect set of words suitable in expressing their opinion and thoughts. I believe Karl pilkington is actually somewhat smart but can’t put anything logical into a sentence without sounding completely stupid and yet a person like me can notice an individual’s intelligence and wisdom and see their qualities. People who are very articulate seem to either be as dumb as a bang of rocks or very naïve and bigheaded.
And is often downplayed and slandered by his associates. He isn’t stupid and I’m getting the impression that he acts stupid and erratic to seem a little interesting. For instance, he’ll say something very logical and then moments later blurt out dumbass shit like an silly thesis as why the sky is blue to stir up Ricky and that tall lanky Aryan looking fellow. But what do I know, I'm stupid and inarticulate so how can I find intelligence when I ain't even smart, yo...dawg...homie. These so called "idiots" know a lot more than those idiots working in the office
Anyway what do you think? Does having a large vocabulary define a person’s intelligence?

I agree but...I think that I worded this thread somewhat badly...erhmm...Does anyone understand what I am trying to say here? I fucked up this thread. Maybe I have just met idiots who have a large vocab but know nothing and like emitting this vibe that people pick up and think "Woah he knows everything" because he has that confident raspy voice
Anyway what made me think this way was because today this fellow at rehab has a okay vocab but people think he is stupid and treat him as such...but I think he's smart...he has to stop saying "Do ya know wha I mean?" at the end of every sentence...it does make him sound stupid but he knows his shit. I have faith in him...I hope he doesn't let me down ...maybe I am putting too much effort into this

I was always very book smart but never took any real pride or anything in it, and always just acted silly/dumb. People all thought I was dumb as a rock until they get back their math test and get a 67 and are like wah wah well what did you get? and I just hold up with 98%

But just because I could absorb facts, understand logic, and memorize alot of things well doesn't mean I'm super smart, I think there are different ways to be smart. I have trouble speaking eloquently. Maybe it's because I never developed the skills I need with my whole dumbass routine.

I think if you put yourself in anyone else's shoes enough everybody is equally as smart as the next person. The only stupid people are people who try to talk without any sort of knowledge on the subject or experience when it contradicts what others with more experience/knowledge.

Some people who try to show off a lot with obscure words and complex phrasing are actually pretty terrible writers. People who are truly skilled at writing are generally pretty smart though. There are also some very smart people who aren't that great with language.

i would say having a large vocabulary, especially knowing many languages only can mean positive things. but smart is such a broad term. really all vocab shows is good ability to communicate with more people.

Understanding logic and having a legit vocabulary definitely go a long way. I'm by no means a genius, but everybody I know refuses to debate with me on any topic of relevance because they know that I can run circles around their argument.
Not trying to toot my own horn here, just saying that, to the average idiot, using big words IS intelligence.

Did you purposely misspell the "your" in the title thread? It's very clever if you did.
Edit: more thought added
Seriously though, being articulate is a skill. But being articulate doesn't mean using correct grammar and syntax all the time. Being articulate around people who aren't "traditionally" articulate could mean understanding slang and in-jokes which can get you further than knowing when to place a comma or semi-colon.
However, anyone doing formal study knows the value of correct grammar and syntax. I study and if I didn't know big words and the like I'd get crap marks. That said there is no way I speak like that when I go down to bowlo to have a beer after looking for shrooms.
Elocution doesn't open the door but it certainly helps you to get down the hall way to the next one.

Maybe you're confusing EQ and IQ. It's very common to confuse the two. Some people feel like if someone can't handle themselves emotionally, then they're a fucking idiot, because the average person can, right? Nope, EQ to IQ is apple to oranges.
And I have to agree that being articulate is a sign of intelligence. Being more articulate than someone is a result of better education, or more reading, or just more knowledge in general. I mean, you know MORE words, BIGGER words, and you USE the words BETTER. Does that not show intelligence? That automatically makes them smarter.

An intelligent person will change the way the speak to suit their audience. It's not intelligent to babble incoherently and the size of the words you use is irrelevant. It's intelligent to make yourself understood by your audience, whoever they may be.

Which brings me back to my point, if you use MORE words, BIGGER words, and you USE them BETTER, it's like you've proven your own point that you're smarter.

I don't think it automatically makes them smarter in all scenarios. A more intelligent person could have gotten into drugs and dropped out of school at a young age simply because of lack of interest. Intelligence is not defined by the amount of knowledge one possesses. It's defined as an ability to learn or understand things. Two highly intelligent people could have taken different paths earlier on in life - one may have been driven by the desire to learn and understand external, worldly things, and the other person may have been driven by the desire to learn and understand himself.

A lot of interesting points here.
I'm inclined to agree, although I think it's more that a good vocabulary and choice diction CAN mean someone's smart, but that someone can be highly intelligent WITHOUT these advantages.
Spelling and (ironically) using the right homonyms (such as your vs you're, there vs their vs they're) are other ones that can betray actual intelligence.

This is where you have mistook me. I never implied that it was mutually exclusive: I never said that you need to be articulate and use big words to be intelligent, I'm saying that IF you are articulate and use big words well, you ARE intelligent. Maybe not in all scenarios, but you're smart relative to someone who doesn't use big words well and who isn't articulate, which is kinda the point here. Those who are articulate/use big words well VS those who aren't/don't.

In re: the rest of this thread there is a strong correlation between erudition and education which also strongly correlates with intelligence. Are they absolute? No. There are some who will argue that there is no such thing as intelligence or argue some new age invention known as EQ being it's equivalent. Right then.

I spelt it incorrectly to see if anyone would notice and it seems only two ppl here have pointed it out. Also how is it clever? I don't understand what you mean by that...anyway I can write English better than I can speak it due to the fact my speech and diction is impaired by my oversized tongue situated in my small narrow mouth so I have trouble speaking fluently and often sound like a foreigner because ny English and accent doesn't sound native...it's neutral

I mostly agree OP, me and I have a lot of great ideas floating around in my head but have trouble verbalizing them correctly sometimes. My cousin tries to sound smart but his worlds often lack substance and its annoying haha.
Not saying I'm that smart however. I sure can be a dumbass sometimes

I thought it clever because wasn't that the point of the post? To see if people would judge you for not being articulate?? Did I over think it?
Anyway... I knew a guy who was dyslexic. This was in the days before it was recognised and he was just a "dumbass". He began to work for a road crew. Eventually he moved up the ranks and then began his own company that is very successful. After running it for a while from the board room he eventually decided to go back to the road crew because it was more real for him. He still owns the company but acts more like one of those under cover bosses, except he is not under cover...
He had the smarts and brains but couldn't communicate in a written form. Hope that encourages you

Exactly.
There are many forms of intelligence. Being able to model three dimensional space in your mind and transfer that information into a two dimensional representation on a piece of paper is a form of intelligence, but we just say that people who can do this are artists. Being able to make many friends and balance many relationships is a form of social intelligence. Just some examples to show how specific or broad a field of intelligence can be.

And if ever somebody has low self esteem because they are not intelligent, we can simply invent a new kind of intelligence such that everyone feels smart and special!

I think it indicates a certain type of intelligence. There are many types of intelligence though.
