Tyvek types and brands: 2 questions

I've been trying to find house wrap Tyvek or "kite" Tyvek, as I've seen it called somewhere else, in my area, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I haven't even been able to find Tyvek envelopes either, so I did a little research to see what Tyvek was, to see if maybe it goes along a different name where I live.
What I found out is that "Tyvek" is just the commercial brand DuPont gave to his polyethylene fibers product, but there are other "fabrics", for lack of a better name, that are also made from polyethylene. 3M has many products that are polyethylene based and look very similar to tyvek, and even GoreTex is polyethylene-based (and I can get both GoeTex and 3M in my area, although I have no idea of the price).
Now, there's surely something special about Tyvek that differentiate it from other polyethylene fiber "fabrics" (or else they would have not been able to register a patent or a brand for it), but taking into considerations that there are many other presentations of polyethylene fibers products (for example overalls for painters, or car covers, that we do have in our area, but noy sold as Tyvek), I was wondering:
- Is it OK to cut the tyvek for the filters from a lab/painter overall, or is the house cover quality better? (stronger, thicker...)
- Does anyone know if other brands of polyethylene fiber fabrics can be used just as tyvek, or does Tyvek's production process give it that "extra" that works for mycology where other products fail?
I'm specifically thinking of 3M's overall #4510 that we have in our area, which lists as one of its suggested applications "Mold Remediation/Mold Spores". Would that one work?

I don't know much about tyvek but I can tell you that you should just buy some synthetic filter disk. You won't regret it.

The suites have done me well. I got them from someone who does mold remediation though. I would think Home Depot probably has them.

I've been algo looking for those synthetic filter disks, especially since RR and so many other very experienced members are so fond of them, but I still haven't been able to find any in my area either. I know that thare are some places left that I haven't looked for, so i haven't give up on those as I have given up on finding Tyvek.
Thanks for the advice though!

The most obvious answer is the best one also...(although sometimes not so obvious to me...) Thanks again, will do that!

Tyvek coveralls are the preferred kind of Tyvek to use.
I used the homewrap for a long time because I had a bunch of it lying around. It worked fine. Then I didn't have any more, and yes, it is really hard to find. Typar seems to have taken over a lot of the homewrap market and it's not even close to the same thing.
Then I used the coveralls. They're also great. The one minor drawback was that the softer, more supple form found in the coveralls is a bit easier to get snagged or folded when you put the jar lid back on in the glovebox. The paper-like consistency of the homewrap really holds its shape nicely.

Awesome! I can only get 3M's polyethylene around here (so it's like Tyvek, but not exactly...). I'm gonna do a couple of lids with that and when I do my g2g we'll test them out to see how it works. Will be posting updates on the Equador+Galindoi thread! Thanks for the input PocketRevolution.

"Typar is thicker and is designed to be un perforated, and is two seperate layers. Tyvek housewrap is micro perforated and one layer." This comes from a guy that sells both and is in the know to that type of thing. As far as housewrap goes, Typar is the nuts, but for shrooms? I don't know, I tried it once, it was like dealing with cardboard, it worked but I was not impressed, quite stiff to work with. There are different "tyveks". Housewrap, envelopes, and cloth (suits) are all different in some way. Tyvek housewrap has holes in it, postal tyvek does not. Postal tyvek and tyvek housewrap are two different animals, but they both work. I like the fact that the tyvek envelopes hold their shape also, I reuse them many times over. As far as the cloth goes, I would rather not have the 'fuzz' grab foreign spores and hold them there ... waiting. I swear by postal tyvek, sometimes it comes to my house for free, but as soon as disasters wane and it allows me to afford it, its sfd's for me. Just too many trusted people recommend them, I've never heard even one negative complaint, can't beat that. OP, hit the PO and pick up some envelopes. They perform better than the housewrap, and time tested.
Peace, FT
