How many quarts out of 20 and or 40 lb bag of wbs?
    #19216859 - 12/02/13 11:43 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Just curious how many quarts one can expect of hydrated pc'd spawn from wbs?

It will vary widely by brand and ingredients, really hard to say.

It can vary by brand, but

1 dry quart of my WBS weighs ~23.3oz.

20lb bag = 20 * 16oz = 320oz

320/23.3= 13.7 dry quarts from a 20# bag.

3 dry quarts make about 7 "myco-quarts"

So, 13.7 dry quarts per 20lb bag divided by 3 dry quarts = 4.57

4.57 * 7 myco-quarts = about 32 myco-quarts

My math is based on the cheap WBS at wal-mart and I remove the sunflower seeds while rinsing.

Does that help?

I would try to do something similar, since I think we use the same WBS...but I throw about 300-400 pounds into a 35 gallon tote so god only knows how much I have at a given time

Ha!  I was just doing this math.
Spitball is right, it comes to approx 1.5Quarts per Lb or 2/3 lb per Quart.
I separate out my sunflower seeds but use them.  Coming up soon will be a just sunflower and WBS-scraps iso tub to compare with cleaned WBS.

what is the reason behind seperating out sunflower seeds?  seems like alot of extra work.

are there brands of WBS that do not contain sunflower seeds?

so far, in my inquiring about WBS, i was only told to try to stay away from brands with excess amounts of corn.  no mention of sunflower seeds until now.  keep in mind, ive never really looked into WBS into recently, as ive only used rye up until now, however, im looking to make the change for the reasons of WBS being much cheaper.

Mostly because they float (along with random bark/twigs) and can either be scooped or poured off while rinsing the WBS.
I also give them a longer boil than the rest of the seeds.
Since they have a lot more air space which allows the Myc to really grab a hold, a consolidated jar of Sunflower has required a fork/knife to break up.
(Some think these pockets allow for easier contams, but I haven't seen a difference).

The sunflower seeds themselves are great.  It's the huge woody husks around the sunflower seeds that contribute nearly nothing.  They may be mediocre as a bulk substrate ingredient, but completely useless when mixed in with spawn and they take up a lot of room.

I just recently started using WBS and I remove the sunflower seeds. They float so they're easy to remove.

If the inside doesn't get colonized, I'm afraid the hull will crack open while spawning and expose it.

I get rid of them just because they don't contribute much. They can't hold much water and they take up space that could have more grain that does hold water.

Yes... but they are often more expensive than the standard blend by 2-3x.

:whathesaid:

I've read that the milo is the best ingredient in WBS.

I just found a feed and seed store that will order it for me at $17.95 for 50lbs. I'm still on the fence about it.

Finch seed doesn't have anything except milo and millet.

Pure milo is great to work with. I'd buy it.

I have been working with WBS since the start. I have never exactly measure the 20 lb bag. But I usually measure the dry 6.5 lb of WBS to pc 7 qt. jars almost at the 3/4 filled level after they are hydrated.  So on estimate look like you can fill the 7 jars ~3 times for the 20 lb. bag and for the 40 lb. bag you can fill the 7 jars ~6 times.  The way I did it was to use a large scale and a big enough basket to fill up to 6.5 lb of WBS.  I ran a few trials first to see the final results.  Not sure if I have answer you question or not?
So far everything is going accordingly with all the experiments I'd tried but have not write them up yet.  I am happy with the growth and results though.  Just the WBS alone will fruit mushrooms inside the quart jars that I found out now. Everything is still new to me and learning more everyday.
