There are several alternatives. Many of the guys from SR have opened SR version 2 that is virtually identical to SR.

I'm staying away for now, but I'm not scared away for good. As long as you know what you are doing its more safe than buying off the street.

if you're just buying small shit, i wouldn't worry about it. the DEA doesn't have funding to give a fuck about joe schmoe on the street. they have their hands tied with land-based trade coming from mexico and south america. i'm sure their cybercapabilities are lagging, and what capabilities they DO have, are used pursuing large-scale distributors.
edit: the above is an opinion based on nothing. jsut an FYI

I also have never and will never. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I prefer to buy my illegal drugs in person from friends. It's interesting to hear about all this though.

Never. It could of been the FBI that set it up. They had access to all the servers right? Probably not.
I checked it out and it seemed like a lot of the stuff I had been interested in (4-aco-dmt) is only being sold in bulk from china now. I made an account on the first one a few weeks before it shut down and never got to try it. Now I'm too scared.

I don't know about open marketplaces like Silk Road, but internet drug trade is farrrrrrr from over. In fact it's pretty thriving. I don't mess with it much myself as i don't like scheduled chemicals in my mailbox, but i have friends who do and I chip them some money sometimes and get some pretty rad stuff from over seas.
Probably not as easy as silk road though so it would be cool to see some of that spring back. But i'm sure there are plenty of markets like it just keeping low profile because of what happened to SR

What alternatives are out there? I'm down to like a 60-day supply of weed and will have to refill my larder. Someone please PM me with a suggested solution.

the safest way is to become good friends with people online, and form your own small communities. i dont know of any legit marketplaces right now.

SMP stole $.50 from me,
BMR is shutting down I think temporarily?
SR 2.0 is up and running looking good so far but it doesn't have as many listings as SMP did. SMP had such a good variety and SR 2.0 has a fraction of the amount
TorMarket looks good, dare I say great, but it has very few venders so far.

Sheep looked extremely sketch from the get go, and they raised their vendor price like 300% the day after SR went under. It was a time bomb, and a lot of people called it correctly. The only marketplace I would trust at this point is BMR whenever it comes back, though SR 2.0 seems to be run by people that were big into the politics vs greedy assholes. If a greedy asshole runs an illict marketplace and it grows they will always run with the money. Having several 3rd parties do escrow is the only way I see of people not getting fucked en mass like this.

TorMarket appears to have very good security, they seem to have promising-looking protocols so far, but they don't have a huge amount of listings.

If the government sets up one of these things it won't be to get your mailing addresses. They will do what SMP did and scam everyone. Then the 60 million will go into black ops. Like when they overthrow the government of Uraguay for legalizing pot next year, that will be funded with CIA drug dollars. How much coin did they get shutting down SR? The US government can't just ask congress for cash to do unethical stuff, so they are in the drug business to fund it. I Don't see any SR customers asking for money back, its a easy way for them to profit large, they figured that out for sure.
Gold luck finding another DPR who won't take the millions and run. The temptation must be huge, go to prison for life or take money and run. I can't tell you how many times I have seen people be legit then go scam and retire. You have at least 2 weeks, with excuses of course, until people figure it out. This was a classic scam perfectly timed, I have never seen anyone go this big before. Like I have seen people take off with 25 grand in orders and that was considered big. Even the RC provider near me with the fake homeland security logo on his page didn't do anything near the millions this scam did. These sites biggest problem will be scams, people were spoiled with SR and its review system and escrow, that was an anomaly. I have been following the online drug scene since the days of newsgroups, its a very checkered history. PS the people behind sheep, if they were smart, had a back up site ready to jump to. They could be behind any of the other sites. Wait a year and see who is still around is my advice.
