It gave me chest tightness, chest pain, irregular heart beat and made me tired.

Bitter Cactus said: Man google "5htp heart valves" then tell me if you want to keep taking it.
for starters, burden of proof. also, here's what i turned up from my googling:
Quote:
Q: People with a particular (and rare) type of serotonin-secreting tumor called hindgut carcinoid, also have various heart problems, such as fibrosis of the endocardium and right heart valves, and heart failure. Should they avoid 5-HTP?
A: That's also pretty scary - until you consider the fact that these conditions have nothing to do with 5-HTP. This rare disease (carcinoid) is associated with extremely high serotonin levels (much, much higher than are obtainable by taking recommended doses of 5-HTP). It's true that this disease, in a very few instances, is associated with the heart problems mentioned above. However, nobody who has studied carcinoid thoroughly would jump to the conclusion that 5-HTP or another serotonin precursor might cause it! There is no evidence to support an initiatory role for serotonin in hindgut carcinoid or any other disease, nor to justify the contention that 5-HTP can cause the kinds of dramatic increases in serum serotonin levels associated with carcinoid tumors. Furthermore, even if 5-HTP caused huge increases in serum serotonin levels - which it has not been demonstrated to do - there is no evidence that this, in itself, would be harmful or that it could increase heart valve problems.8 In fact, in cats, 5-HTP-induced serotonin production has been found to reduce vulnerability to ventricular fibrillation.9 (One caution, however, for anyone with this rare type of carcinoid tumor: Since there is a statistical correspondence between serum levels of serotonin and valvular heart disease in some patients with carcinoid tumors (19 out of 604 in the Duke study),10 it is inadvisable at this time for those with carcinoid cancer to take supplemental 5-HTP.)
source.
Same thing I found when I assumed the derelict burden of proof. I've read that is a bad idea to take 5-htp before MDMA, but never that it could cause problems when taken afterwards.

It shouldn't cause SS if you haven't taken it with mao-a inhibitors, serotonin releasers, or re uptake inhibitors. However, It does cause build of serotonin, where you don't want it to build up. Which made me stop taking it. I'll post a few articles when i locate them.

I'd much rather take an SSRI long term then damage my heart valves with 5htp.
That much excess serotonin should not be circulating through your heart and body..

5htp improves my mood, my memory, my sleep and it makes me trip balls on pretty much anything when i take it regularly. i don't take it during trips though. just 1-200mg nightly with melatonin for sleep. i've never had any problems and i've taken it for about 12 years now, maybe longer. i'll also refer to my source that clearly states that the heart valve thing is a myth. it was one of many that googling produced since i needed to "look it up" in an attempt to verify bitter cactus's claim.

There were a few folks rockin round with that sign, the mdma caps going around weren't something to be trifled with either.

If i'm not mistaken, 5htp passes the blood brain barrier on its own and is active in its current state.

Its used for the comedown, I've met alot of people who buy it for that. As for seratonin syndrome, I've met people who were on antidepressants and just said they didn't roll as hard. My guess would be it causes light light seratonin syndrome to where its just listed as a possibility for sensitive people or high dose cases.
