I have seen people make cane with a hand drill, but I cannot quite picture how you would mix colors. Do you just glob them together and hold it in the flame while you spin one handle with the drill?

I will grab a color rod and a few larger sized rods like 12mm or so. Hold them in my hand tightly together and then use a glass rod to fuse the tip at one end and then on the other. So i got everything being held together by then ends. Then i insert a 7mm rod in my drill about 6-7" long and use that to punty up with one end. I then begin spinning letting my left hand (opposite the drill) kinda drag which cause it to spin glass. I will then stretch and regather small sections at a time untill fully mixed. I half mix by hand is cool too. Great for eyeballs and to achieve marble or stone effect.

NIce, thanks! So the 12 mil rods are clear? And you only use one color rod per few 12 mils?
sorry for all the questions lol

Islandlife: Awesome piece. This is a very original and creative piece. Much different then any of the character rigs i have seen. I especially love the raticello design the artist used to make the dream catcher. Thanks for sharing.
LiquidGlass: I use two 12mm rods and mix them with one steelwool stick equivilent in length to the clear rods i will be using. This way i just grip all the rods in my hand and connect the ends with hot glass. After that punty up and start spinning. However 12mm rods are not important it is just the clear ratio. You can use more or less clear then i do to achieve a more or less saturation/transparency.

Awesome thanks!
How would you feel if I attempted one of the cordyceps dude you made? I would probably just basically try to make it identical so I can get up my non-production skills. I have made several non-production pieces over the years, but I seem to be mainly stuck in production mode and have a hard time thinking outside the box.
So I figure if I imitate others awesome pieces I can start to get in that frame of mind and think of some awesome original ideas of my own

Love the Piece man. It came out beautiful. That's crazy that you mixed the steel wool down 6 to 1 and it still came out so saturated!
I don't really do mushrooms very often, which is funny because I do so many jellyfish and they're so close in technique. Here's a mushie chillum I made awhile back.
Hope you don't mind me sharing in here.

Sharing is cool. I like that nice prodo style chillem.
Liquid glass: I wouldn't mind if you made just a few and gave me props for the idea, just don't start a whole production line on my idea please. I just took the Merc Minion class in Santa cruz a few months back and he really emphasized originality. Lots of people are recently sculpting character rigs with arms and legs, smoking bowl on the back and mouthpiece head, holding a dabber. As far as i know its just the new popular thing, but to become recognized you need to take it and try to twist it in a way where it becomes more 'you'. For me i chose the mushroom idea because i have been hunting edibles and psychedelics for the last 10 years and really put a lot of time and devotion into the fungi world for a good portion of my life. And i think that the cordyceps mushroom is the coolest mushroom out there:)
That being said i don't mind if you try, but maybe don't shoot for an exact carbon copy. Best of luck man and i hope you have fun doing it! I mean that should always be a part of creating something cool.
Working on a Coryceps bumble bee right now, i will share pics soon after it is finished

Jonny: part of the reason it is still so saturated is because i used a coil potting technique to create that color tube.

Yeah I would definitely give you credit for the idea. Do you have a glassblowing name? I have been growing fungi(edible & psychoactive) for about ten years and hunting for about half of that. I am also a member of the mycological society in my area. So I too am a big fan of fungus as well and that piece struck a chord. i agree the cordyceps is one of the most fascinating specimens. I will try to throw my own style into it and make it different. I have a bit of production to get through for xmas first, but i'll post in this thread whatever I make, when it happens.
By the way if you are ever in the humboldt area let me know

Liquid Glass: I call myself foggy Mountain, you can look me up on facebook or glasspipes.org
Sounds good. I wish you the best with your piece. I got a friend in Arcata i might want to visit sometime soon. I will let you know. It would be cool hunting for some mushrooms in the soon coming rainy season as well. And of course i would love to melt some glass together. I have found it is incredibly helpful watching others work. There is not too many of us out there compared to a lot of other trades.
Chickensoup that is a nice photo. Wish it were bigger. It reminds me of a few pieces of art i made about 5-6 years back. I still got them somewhere, everyone told me if i made them into a pipes i would be able to sell them.

I will take a wild guess and say your friends name is Aaron? If so, he is a good friend. We shared shop space together. And I have seen pieces like that of his. In fact, years ago I made a couple mushroom natural perc bubs with a bunch of mushrooms like that, but ended up smoking out of them and breaking them. . .

Yes it is Aaron. I had a feeling you may have ran into him. funny thats the small world of glass artist i was talking about. Yea i made a few and then he gave one a shot. Maybe two i forget. Here is one that Aaron made. Worked with the guy for like 6 years. We kinda went our separate ways a while back. Never the less he is a very good artist and a nice guy all.
