Honey liquid culture, how big should mycelium get?
    #19211233 - 12/01/13 04:51 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hopefully the picture works (total newbie).
But how big should my cloud of mycelium get before I turn it into a syringe?  It has stayed the same size now for a few days (about half the size of a cotton ball or slightly larger than a marble).  It's warm here so I would have thought I'd see some more growth in that amount of time.
It's button mushroom agaricus bisporus.

Thanks guys
-Lou Lou

I would test that out on some agar or something first before using it on a bunch of blocks and risking that it might be contaminated.

Honey LC is very prone to contamination.

If it isn't contaminated, you can use it right now.  Just shake the bejesus out of it first to break up and disperse all the mycelium.

Good luck.  And welcome to shroomery!

Thanks queen of kings. I think I might put it on grain (that should work right?) as I haven't bought any agar or plates since it's rather expensive here in australia (only a couple mushroom growing supply places).

Below picture is wild bird seed that I injected with a spore syringe that I made myself, I think its mycelium so fingers crossed I have succeeded.  I honestly didn't think I would first time.

If agar is prohibitively expensive, may I suggest just using one of the grocery store teks?  Pasty recently put out a good one.

seems very doable, thanks van der griegen.......the only real problem would be the potato flakes.  I'm wondering if I could use that instant mashed potato stuff.  And I would have to use honey because karo/cornsyrup is not popular here so it's pricey. I have never even heard of bars of agar,  but as he says I can use powdered.

Those instant mashed potatoes are what we call potato flakes--you've got the right stuff in mind. Barring that, you can also just take a small piece of potato and slice it thinly, but leaving a small piece at the bottom attached so it opens like a book.  You can boil that and remove it at the end with the same result.  Honey is just fine, and there are tons of Asian markets in melbourne which probably sell agar agar.  Maybe the Great Eastern Groceries Centre on Russell Street?  It's 7:53 AM there so I can't Skype them for you yet.

Russell street is about an hour drive from me but I live in a suburb with a large asian immigrant population.......so I can get all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff here.  Have only ever seen agar in powder form though.  That should still work,  but I will look again for bars.

The powder is better, IMO, but usually just a little more expensive.  Not prohibitive, though.

I pay about a buck fifty for a little bag of Telephone brand agar at my local asian market.  I buy a handful!!

Everyone can make agar and once they do, they never look back!!

I used to make my agar out of brown rice flour and water.  Mix up like a thin ish pancake batter, spoon a bit into a jar, and pressure cook 30 minutes.  Voila - agar.  Mycelium tears it up!

woah it really does eat that shit up!  Although this may sound dumb I'm not entirely sure what you do with the agar once it's colonised? Cut it up and put the pieces through the bulk substrate?

Not quite, but almost!  You cut out a piece of it in a still air box and put it into a jar of grain spawn.  After that's colonized you can spread it out via grain-to-grain transfers to as many as you need, and then inoculate your bulk substrate.
