Need a new hygrometer
    #19215075 - 12/01/13 10:48 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Hey,
First grow in a few years here, having a bit of trouble initiating a pin set. Thinking it could be a humidity issue as I am FAE'ing with an electric fan. I haven't used a hygrometer in years (I'd get a $25.00 digital and it would stop working after 2 months). Heard they are crap (digital's) from recent readings, wondering if anyone can suggest a GOOD analog and where to find, or a good digi if they exist. Only got about 20-25 bucks to spend...thanks!

1) What is your FC like?
2) check cigar shops

I'd just go without one!  If your cakes are glistening, you know they're moist enough.  If they aren't, mist them.

But the FC could still make a difference. He didn't say if it was a SGFC. If it's been a few years, it might be a terrarium. He doesn't say how he's using the fan for FAE, either.

If there's one thing I've learned on this board, it's that you can't just assume what someone else is doing.

True enough but I find that you can get all you need to know by observing your fruits and sub, they will tell you what they need.

Sorry guys more details then. Yes it's a SGFC maybe 20 qt capacity? I can fit 8 cakes comfortably atop 6 inches perlite. been using a fan to dry fruits in the same room as growing, when i do my 4-6 FAE's each day, I just hold the fan over the terrarium or set it on top to blow air down for 30 seconds or so. I mist 3 times a day every 6-8 hours or so. Thanks y'all, whaddya think?

Yeah these two cakes aint tellin me shit which is why I'm worried. One of em is going on two weeks wednesday without even a bump or pin or anything. I'm usually harvesting an 8th a cake after a week in there, but those are almost always in vitro fruits. These were naked when they went in, making me wonder if I've ever had a "real pinset", or get lucky each time. I usually get a 2nd or 3d flush from cakes that fruit. Gettin off topic, freakin out, aaaaaaaaahhhh!!! Thanks

Is the fan constantly running? That will mess with a SGFC's humidity... if not, then as Van der Griegen and Pastywhyte said, your cakes will tell you everything you need to know, so you can save your Hygrometer money.

This is probably your problem. A SGFC rely's on a rooms natural air currents. Fans running for any period of time in the room is going to dry it and your cakes out.

Well I've been drying fruits in here with said fan for about a week. The fan runs for 20-24 hours, about 8 feet away and pointed in the opposite direction from my SGFC. I had a feeling this might be a problem. Should be an easy fix though, and go back to fanning with the lid of SGFC.

Seriously consider a dehydrator. One of the best investments I have made and they can be had for cheap.

Yup. Just dry or fruit in a different room, or buy a dehydrator. Let us know how it goes in a few days. You may want to do another dunk as well, if your cakes got dry.

Funny thing is, cakes feel heavy. Makes me think they are already waterlogged because I think I tend to over-mist at times. Pulled two cakes out 2 days ago that fruited nice to let air dry before second dunk, and they are feather lite as usual...garrrr!!!

Wow you guys are awesome, love to pass out but finally got some objective opinions. I have TWO dehydrators Ogre, but I have heard from 2 clients (possible rip off jack moves) that my fruits were bogus and that was my drying technique. And for the next month I will only have about about 50-100 g wet a week, so is that economical? how many racks to use with only about a quad in the dehydrator?

MS fruits can vary on potency. I've experienced it first hand. As for your dehydrator question, I'd say whatever you need to, depending on the open area on the trays.

^This. Actives do not start to break down until well past 300F. You could toss em in the oven if you were hard up. O2 will break them down tho, so you will loose more potency the longer it takes them to get dry.

Its pretty much agreed that potency is genetic. If you want consistently potent fruits, you better start looking into agar, cloning, and isolation.

STop laughing at me swan! serious mang, if they are waterlogged would I know? I dunno, been so long Ogre. But 11 days of misting/fanning I gots nothing, should assume something's wrong? I have been weighing cakes on digi scales throughout each phase of the project trying to get this right super OCD! said trippin!

You said they feel heavy, so I'm going to assume it's water weight. As for waterlogged, I've only gotten my cakes like that when I realize they're spent.

Try moving your fans from your fruiting room, and be patient. Listen to what your mycelium says they need.

...and I'm not laughing AT you. I'm laughing at myself, because I catch myself making assumptions, and I try to avoid making those.

Quick question, how long did you consolidate? Skipping or a short consolidation will lead to a long time for pinning.

Oh snap Pasty these were at the 2 month mark from inocualtion, twice as long as I usually take! Didn't think the ONE inoculation point would even make it across the entire sub! But they smelled luck button mushies and dey was whyte! so i fruited em!

But how long after they were at 100% did you let them sit and consolidate? Brf is super nutritious and the mycelium needs time to digest its meal.

If you birthed them right at 100% you can automatically expect it to take at least 2 weeks for pins to appear while the cakes finish the consolidation. The reason we don't birth them  at 100% is so they don't end up drying out while they do this.

Speaking of isolating Pasty...I'm getting some decent looking cakes for cloning from a MS (ropey, rhizomorphic, dikaryotic, beautiful fruits, etc). Tried printing twice and failed (No print appeared, lol). In theory I should be successful with a tissue transfer or agar slant, and then I want to move back/up to grains again. Any ideas? I feel like I already typed this and you have a tek in yer piece. Trippin!

They always allow 6-10 days consolidation time after the visible substrate is covered completely; I call that 90% if that makes sense?

As was mentioned, stop running a fan in the same room as the SGFC. This affects your RH in a bad way.

I can't count the number of times I've posted that you should NEVER run a fan in the same room as a shotgun terrarium.

Search amazon.de for a fischer hair hygrometer and order one.  They're about the only thing that is dependable.
