How much Vermiculite?
    #19213519 - 12/01/13 04:12 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Before anyone says anything, I used the search engine and couldn't find an answer to this question.

How much vermiculite do I need to pick up for 12 1/2 pint cakes?

I'm going out to buy this verm, and frankly have no idea how many bags i should pick up.

Thanks

Didn't look at the size of the bag, but you'll never need more than 1 bag. Unless the bag hold likes 2 cups, you'll be fine.

I have another question...

I've searched this too but couldn't find a clear answer.

So if I can only find full pint jars at my local stores, will they colonize in about the same time if I only fill half of the jar with the verm/brf?

Obviously if I filled it up all the way it would take about the double the time to colonize.

Thanks again

8 qt bags tend to be expensive for the quantity.  I would recommend a larger bag; vermiculite is incredibly useful stuff in this hobby.  I started about 4 months ago, and I'll probably be through my 2 cubic ft bag in another month.

Full pint jars should colonize fine, even filled to the brim.  The problem is removing the resulting cake from the jar.  If you get wide-mouth pint jars, you should be alright.  Just make sure to pack your substrate nice and loosely.

I'd hit it.

Don't use pint jars. GET THE PROPER HALF PINT JARS OR YOU'LL REGRET IT. I'm serious man.

Don't get the tall skinny half pints. They will work but take longer to colonize and tend to stall on the bottom. Get the Kerr short fat wide mouth half pint jars. Ace Hardware sells them. You can also buy them on Amazon

I use the skinny half pints and they work fine.  Even use some wide mouth pint jars.

I've never tried the short half pints for comparison though.  I do believe they'd colonize a bit faster.

They colonize way faster with much less issues on average
