So a friend of mine is having some problems with a 60/40 coir verm casing, he was testing out a new terrerium and for some reason the casing has been nothing but aborts. temp ranges from 72-76, and rh ranges from 85%-95%. Air exchange by fanning 3 times a day. any ideas?

Increase temp to 82-84. I guess it depends on the strain though.

Sounds a bit high for fruiting IMO. My guess would be a problem with the rH. Is it really 85%-95%? Is it stable, or does it fluctuate much?

it fluctuates, at 95% for 1 hr, then drops down to lowest 85% over the process of 2 hrs, then back up to 95% for an hour again. oh yeah, and they're GT's, PF tek

Are you 100% positive they are aborting mushies , or just growing slowly ? Temp range is okay .
Do try to stabilize that RH swing , or at least get it to sway slower .
IMHO your myc colony is just not ready to produce yet . Have patience .

Could it be a lack of light?

Nah, given the swing in humidity, which is within margins IMO, I'd say there's a lack of air exchange. Fanning 3 times a day may not be enough; consider installing an automated system for air exchange (fan with timer, bubbler).

well he switched it back over to the poor mans pod terrerium to try and salvage whats left of the pins, this was definitely strange... I almost think that when the humidity started to peak dur'n the 1 hr shift it might have gotten too high, I think the hygrometer might max out at 95%

Quite possible... I had some problems with 60/40 coir-verm running with USH and air pump myself. I never quite narrowed it down to what the problem was but humidity and air exchange was not consistent (some times too dry, some times too much rH, some times not enough air), so I attribute the problem to this.

I, myself, have yet to find a good automated air exchange method that does not dry the casing out. Many people have said cool mist has been the answer for them, at least for larger terrariums. I'm wondering if it is possible to speed up the fan on a USH, since it does not provide enough air exchange and creats too high rH.

how deep is your substrate?

how deep is the casing layer?

how large is the terrarium?

Pull he aborts off, this signals the mycelia to begin producing fruits.

his casing is about 1 inch deep of 60/40, 1 half pint pf tek jar, then covered up with 60/40, this is in a tin 8"x8". the terrarium is huge casing prob takes up about 1/30th of the terrarium...Couple of other things I thought of that might give somebody ideas, the pins are all along the edge of the casing, and there are drainage holes in the tin..

if you can and want to subject this casing to testing instead of rescuing it. You can always take various pieces from the casing and see how moist it is by squeezing it. There may be other ways to do this without loosing the casing. Just a suggestions.

My first thought when you say there are draniage holes is that the rest of the casing is too wet. However on many casings pins form on the edges because this is where water droplets form. Water might actually be soaking through the holes helping it to pin... Just things to check for.

How did the colonized layer of casing look? Often ppl don't get it quite even and mycelium starts poking through the edges first. If it was even then i would thing water content was too low. I say this for the reason of more water being available at the edges where the container is. How thick of a casing layer?

If mycelium was rather thick on top, the casing material will have a hard time soaking up excess water and this may cause pins to abort when drenched.

Most likely, air exchange was the major cause of failure though.

if they're only formed along the edge of the casing, sounds to me like your casing's too dry.
