Persistent Poison Oak
    #19210280 - 11/30/13 09:36 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

This fucking bites.  About 2 weeks ago I came into contact with some poison oak.  Cut down some shrubs at work and I guess it was growing all through them, but was totally defoliated at this time of year so I didn't notice what it was.

Got a wicked rash, went to urgent care the day before my 26th birthday (and subsequently the last day of my free health insurance).  Got a methylprednisolone prescription, and took it out to the end as prescribed.  It went ALMOST all the way away, then started coming back with a vengeance after I ran out of pills.

Called into work, went down to my occupational health clinic and got a prescription of prednisone, which I've been taking as prescribed.  Got 4 days left on this (MUCH heavier than the first) prescription.  Went in for a checkup today and the doc was making some disconcerting faces at me.  Said it should have been gone by now with the amount of steroids I'm on.  Now I have another week out of the field at work.  I'm really hoping they can keep me working in the office, cause I sure can't afford to miss a week of work right now.

The rash is better than it was was when it was rebounding, but I still have a large bit of pink skin around, and it still itches like the dickens.

REAAAAALLY hoping I haven't developed some condition that needs treatment just as my health care runs out.  Especially since the health insurance I signed up for from my employer doesn't start until Jan 1st.

Anybody had an experience like this?  I've had poison oak/ivy before, but never this bad, and never lasting this long, especially with treatment.

Well urushiol remains active even after the plant is dead, so be wary of any foliage on the ground in an area where it grew heavily; or any dead foliage you see on other plants in that area.

I hope you didn't induce eczema.

Yeah, man.  That's what I'm saying.  Hope I didn't shock my body into something more serious than just a reactionary rash.

I for sure haven't been around any poison plants, and I know the drill with washing clothes and gear and such.

I got some pretty bad poison ivy this spring where I could barely move my hand at the worst. They gave me betamethasone and an antibiotic, both as creams. Luckily I got reimbursed for my time off work more or less by workers comp. A rash going strong after 2 weeks sounds worse than what I had though, I would wonder about possible re-exposure as mentioned (e.g. from clothes or footwear.) I've heard cashews can be bad if you're over-sensitive as they're in the same family. Have you been able to avoid scratching?

For the most part.  Sometimes I catch myself getting a couple scratches in.  Ice packs seem to help with the itch a lot.

I'm just fucking going crazy on all these steroids.  For the first week I was taking benadryl all day, too, but had to stop because it was making me a zombie.  Now I'm all irritable and on edge, and kinda stressed that this is something more serious :feelsbadman:

I've heard from a few people that it can get worse every time you get it. For relief I would sometimes put my hand under really hot water from the tap or shower. Probably not the best for it but better than scratching I think. When you really scratch it makes it way worse.

That sucks balls. One thing to remember is that it doesn't actually spread and the oil from the plant (urushiol) is very persistent, so if it looks like it's spreading or coming back, you could just be re-exposing yourself to the oil that may be on shoes, clothes, sheets, anything--and that oil will basically stick around until it's washed off. Sheets are a big one. Wash your sheets if you haven't. A friend once managed to get the oil from his hands/clothes onto his pillowcase and slept on it and got poison ivy in his eye, which was super nasty and he had to go get some prednisone, too. So wash everything you came in contact with in soap and hot water.

Something that sounds nasty but works: rinsing the affected area with water that's as hot as you can stand for as long as you can stand. This will itch like hell while you're under the water, but after you're done, it'll keep it from itching for a few hours. It'll probably ooze after this so you'll want to bandage it afterwards. Good luck.

When I got poison oak it took a few weeks for the blisters to disappear.  That stuff definitely doesn't go away instantly.

The oil can also stick around, so make sure you wash your clothing with the soap that denatures the toxins urushiol

I've also heard the exact opposite. I got it quite bad as a kid a couple times, and it seems to affect me less and less. Toxicodendron (which is a marvelous word mind you) contains Urushiol as someone mentions, and will attempt to absorb into your skin. I come across it occasional foraging in the woods, but its never affected me like as a kid, where I looked like I had the chicken pox, was terrible. But one thing very important to remember, especially for those out in the woods often is if you do happen to contact it, don't scratch the skin, ever, once you break the skin open and allow it to absorb in, it can go systemic, and it may start popping up in random parts of your body, and then immediately wash it, if you're out in the woods, find a creek/stream and use a leaf and clean it off good. At least the times of late, I notice the plants just a bit to late, and the tip of a leaf just barely touches my leg, so it wasn't like I've rolled around in it. I've become much more aware of their appearance and habitats, but it seems to itch for a bit and be annoying, but by the time I leave the woods, I no longer notice it and forget about rather quickly. That also goes for stinging nettles, but they are much less severe and only harass you with histamine, but itching just once will allow it to annoy you for quite some time and get much more intense.

"find a creek/stream and use a leaf and clean it off good".  Not a poison oak leaf  How bad would that suck lmao

As for this information, I agree.  It seems to make the most sense.

Yeah, we keep Tecnu on our trucks and use that to wash it off whenever we notice it's around.  This day it was a long day and we were trying to GTFO of there quickly and I didn't stop to inspect.

I'm thinking maybe laundry detergent has something to do with it?  I noticed my GF changed detergents around the same time.  Maybe that's why it's persisting?  I dunno.  I think I'm gonna get my old brand detergent and see how that goes.

I would get it bad when I was a kid, but now the most I will get is a single little blister here and there. Even one little spot can drive you nuts though. I will wake up in the morning and find I had scratched gouges into my leg.

Still, nothing is worse than having your entire dick and balls covered in weeping blisters.

First time I ever got it was pretty mild, but I discovered it between my ass cheeks while tripping on acid at a 3 day camp out party.  Cleared some ground to set up my tent and ripped up some vines, then took a shit and must've brushed my ass cheek with the oil.

All I could think about the whole acid trip was puns about how "THIS REALLY CHAPS MY ASS" and "God dammit this is irritating."

Got some fancy dye/fragrance free laundry detergent.  Here's hoping it helps.

First time I got it bad, it was REALLY bad.

I was homeless at the time too, which made it way worse.

I had such bad blisters on the sides of my fingers that I couldn't even close my hand all the way because they would pop.

I had it horribly one year, left me bed ridden for two weeks. It happened in the bends of my knees and down my calves. Horribly painful, got some steroids, cortisone cream and some Benadryl and it went away after a week or so. Also wash and scrub everything in your house. Good luck.
