C02 blanket
    #19211590 - 12/01/13 09:01 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi folks. I've been putting a couple of batches of home-brew on gas in my kegerator the past couple days and had a thought. I used the search function but didn't come up with anything. Can you let me know if this question has already been asked and if it's useful at all?

I have a 5 LB C02 tank that I use to pressurize my kegs. I know myc likes high C02 with some GE for colonization. If you were doing a mono tub, would it be worthwhile at all to lay a C02 blanket over the substrate immediately after spawning to get the conditions right for colonization right off the hop? Or would this result in too high concentrations of C02 once the myc produces the gas via aerobic respiration?

Could it possibly bring down colonization times?

It would be really easy to gas the tub evenly before putting the lid on.

Thoughts?

:pokerawe:

They breathe oxygen. Also, that thing is unnecessary and is probably running the RH down and choking out the oxygen.

because it's really really easy to do and any home brewer already owns the equipment...and  I'm curious about biology and whether something like this would have a measurable effect... don't look at me like that, it's just curiosity.

I meant just boosting the C02 once right at spawn but your edit about needing the high 02 levels off the start in order to respire C02 probably is the answer I was looking for, though I doubt it would affect RH at all. Thx.

Please, do some research before tampering with your grow.

Otherwise, don't let us skeptics hear about your activities. It's a reasonable thought. But silly if you actually knew what was going on. Minimum research man.

Your thoughts are super interesting.

You should target that your colonizing fungus create all the CO2 you need not add it from another source.  Slighty higher CO2 during colonization is natural.  You can achieve this by plugging the polyfil holes on a monotub more tightly for the first 11 days where the tub is colonizing and getting a hold on the substrate.  Some people even tape the holes over during colonization.  I don't recommend it but it has been done with great success.

The fungi will need fresh air to realize it is time to fruit and develop large healthy fruit-bodies.

That among other things.

Like evaporation, good RH and depleting nutrients.

They like air as much as we do. So finding that perfect calibration of it all is what beginners aim for.

Right on Icesyn.  You nailed it... light, a hold on the substrate, and perhaps a cold shock.  There is an entire science behind it.

:whathesaid:

Bring down colonization times by prepping your substrate properly and dunking your colonized grains before spawning.

The initial level of CO2 in your tub is not going to matter, the grains will need time to recover anyhow.
