260lbs of Pot Falls From the Sky in San Diego
    #19211183 - 12/01/13 04:09 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/national-international/Plane-Drops-Bundles-of-Pot-into-US-Flies-Back-to-Mexico-233528591.html?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_LABrand

Quote:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection provided this image of the delivery as it was spotted north of Brown Field.

Bundles of pot fell from the sky over San Diego, arriving in an airdrop from a plane that originated in Mexico, federal officials said Tuesday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized more than 260 pounds of marijuana bundled and tied to a metal cage from a field near Brown Field Airport, less than two miles north of the U.S-Mexico border.

Agents said the marijuana was delivered to a drop location north of the airport around 4:15 a.m. Monday by an ultra-light aircraft.

The bundles of pot were tied to a cage used to hold cargo in that type of aircraft, officials said.

When federal agents caught up with the illegal delivery, they took two people into custody. Ten bundles of marijuana with an estimated street value of $157,000 were seized, officials said.

CBP's Office of Air and Marine (OAM) spotted and tracked the plane as it crossed the border and returned to Mexico without landing.

The suspects are a 32-year-old undocumented immigrant and a 49-year-old legal permanent resident.

The CIA's budget is ridiculous, do you really think that they as an organization need to smuggle drugs and sell them to supplement their legal windfalls? Any instances of "the CIA" smuggling drugs have just been disgruntled workers that are looking to make an extra buck or two-hundred thousand on the side. The CIA, as an entity, does not have any sort of domestic policy of selling drugs.

True, but the CIA can be linked to the cocaine trade. It's unlikely this is true anymore, but in the days of the Cold War, in order to stop the "Evil Empire," the CIA was responsible for clandestinely funneling aid to numerous south/central American paramilitary forces. Some of these forces (i.e. the Nicaraguan Contras) can be directly linked to the trafficking of cocaine.

There are even reports that CIA assets were used to transport the cocaine. I also wouldn't be surprised if the CIA helped facilitate movement of heroin in Southwest Asia in an effort to help the anti-Soviet Mujahideen out in Afghanistan.

These days, the CIA has little reason to get involved in the drug trade, though I'm sure that US Intelligence has turned a blind eye to the heroin/hashish trade run by our anti-Taliban allies, the Northern Alliance (they were disbanded some years ago though).

Yep, I know what you mean. But still it's not like the CIA was using the money for themselves, they've always had more than enough funding to go around--which is why I said they don't have a domestic policy of drug smuggling/trade. Gotta do what you gotta do overseas, I guess.

actually that is not true.

:nojustno:

the birth of the CIA was extremely informal, originally called the OSS, it was housed in an abandoned naval warehouse where the number of employees were outnumbered 10 to 1 by rats.  Funding was nearly non-existent and the 4 guys responsible for the operation spent their own money for a lot of the parts they needed to build their gear from scrap parts and salvaged military gear.

The history of the CIA is one of innovation and triumph over adversity-- the sheer scope of what the agency has become is mind-boggling when you look at where they were just 50yrs ago... really a story of 'rags-to-riches' and now that we have the Freedom Of Information Act a lot of the declassified documents have produced some pretty good reading by a few retired operatives and seasoned journalists.

I'm not here to argue with you, because you've got some facts here, but I'm talking CIA not OSS. Pretty much all of the US armed services have had no shortage of cash since the end of WWII, and especially during and following Eisenhower's presidency . Sure, the covert intelligence community started out small, but it totally mushroomed with the Cold War, and again afterwards. Dunno if I'd call it "rags-to-riches" though, especially given the fact that the money is siphoned from unwitting taxpayers.

well okay-- granted, but it DID spawn in a dingy slime hole of a place and took several years before anyone took them seriously... keep in mind, in those days shortwave radio and cross-dressing were "high tech cutting edge operations"

they did accomplish some amazing advances out of necessity and right you are, damned cold-war made it all possible...  it has become the beast

Just curious, are you a James Bamford reader? Because if you're not I think you'd enjoy his Body of Secrets about the NSA that I recently picked up. It's pretty dense stuff, but fascinating nonetheless.

 It's good to see a fellow citizen curious of US covert operations. If you have a favorite book on the subject, I'd love to hear your opinion about it. I'm only beginning my research.

Very nice indeed

i would suggest spycraft- the book mentioned above.  It was given to my father by a retired CIA man who recently passed away.  He said at the time that he read all sorts of books about the CIA and that there's a lot of garbage in print that is inaccurate or just plain lies.  He recommended Spycraft saying it was actually one of the better ones he had seen--- acknowledging the FIA as a pivotal role in making declassified information and stories available to journalists and other enquiring minds such as ourselves.

if you can handle big words and don’t mind wading through the acronyms and sometimes several pages of very dry historical references-- there are actually some real-life heart pounding first person accounts of real craft in action... photos of real spy gear, detailed descriptions of operations that were successful and not so successful.

in the end it would appear that we are our own worst enemy, no big surprise there eh?

I'll have to check Spycraft out, then. Thanks for the info.

It does appear that way, especially in today's day and age. Though, the more I read about Soviet intelligence agencies the more I'm led to believe that our own counterparts were born of a necessary evil to combat other evils. I suppose I can never be too sure, though, how much of the Soviet info I've read is misinformation or simply propaganda--I know some if it has been just that. Anyways, I digress, I don't want to junk up this thread with spy stuff. It was great meeting you, travelleler.

Well the CIA does need a shut ton of drugs to enter the USA to help fund them.

If drugs ceased to exist on the US the CIA's funding along with all government funding would plummet.

You do realize how much money is made through the arresting and prosecution of drug offenders correct? Add in the sales of the drugs and you have a great money making scheme. To bad the UD government thought of it first. :smirk:
