Enriched sawdust for spawning to straw

If we use g2 s to make sawdust spawn can we use it to knock up lime soaked straw and if we enrich it to 2o% will that give it more mileage? We have been using grain spawn so far but would love to use sawdust for obvious reasons. Discussion?

it's all we use. saves a lot on grain spawn making, as the grain seems to offer no advantage as far as yields or speed go.
we were getting pins in 9 days after inoculation this summer, with pinks.
two 6lb blocks per bale.
you could probably get by with less, but I haven't felt the need to try.

Hardwood sawdust is not easy to find here. After 20% supplementation grain would be just as cheap for me.

Ha! I was just about to make a thread asking this exact question!
I can find bran super cheap, but not grain. So I think it's just a matter of what's available to you and at what price.

Yea sawdust and bran are both free here in this hippy town. We get bran from local bread makers. They are glad to be rid of the stuff. And tons if sawmills. Drake you did mean 20% enriched? Was wondering about trying diff enrichments like five or ten percent. Prolly don't matter. Anyone else?

Might have just been the strain, but last time I tried oysters using sawdust spawn I got poor results. I'll have to try it on a strain I know fruits well and do a side by side. I do like sawdust though, so many inoculation points!

If you have free bran try 40%. Should be closer too grain spawn in added nitrogen but have more inoculation points and be easier to prep.

We also have access to organic soybean husks and chips from a local tempeh co. that might work really well. The trick there is hydration. They get sticky pretty quick. We are selling quite a bit of spawn to folks doing straw inoc so would be nice to come up with a good formulation or two that didn't involve grain.
