Galerina?
    #19206607 - 11/29/13 09:48 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I saw some of these growing in someone's garden and thought they looked like cyans from a distance, so I raided one under cover of darkness in order to ID it. Unfortunately in my haste I seem to have picked a mutant  Anyway, I'm guessing G. marginita. Am I correct?

Habitat:
Ireland. Bark or woodchip bed.

Gills:
Ochre. Adnate

Stem:
Brown, darkening towards the base. Smooth.

Cap:
6cm diameter. Reddish brown. Greasy.

Spore print color:
In progress. I see some what looks like flimsy veil reminants that looks reddish brown, so I'm expecting that to be the colour.

Bruising:
none

Edit: stem is hollow btw

That's what I would call it.  You can still see slight remnants of the annulus there as well.

They sure can look similar to Psilocybe at a glance!

There's no scales on the stipe so I think it's galerina. I read on Wikipedia
Quote:

while they are both hygrophanous, K. mutabilisdries from the centre outwards (so having a lighter colour in the centre) and G. marginata dries from the edge inwards,

, but this one dries from the centre outwards, So this must be BS on Wikipedia?

yeah, they tend to dry however they want to, what causes it to dry outward in or inward out is how thick the pileus cuticle/context is.

Spore print color and stem texture look more like Kuehneromyces.

Galerina has more of a rusty brown spore print.

Interesting, I think ive seen something close around here, but have yet to photogrpah it, its like the pholiota that last year i was calling H. fasciculare. granted there were both in the area i see, but i digress. cool! looks like i have more research to do.:takingnotes:

Alan am i correct in saying that the direction that the hygrophanous cap dries is not indicative of the species?

Probably using that word wrong too haha

The thing that's confusing me is that in my field guide shows a picture of Galerina marginata but they appear to be drying from the centre outwards
