Store blank plates at room temp. Never refrigerate them, save that for when you have something growing on it that you want to stall.

Why do you say never? What if he wanted to store for several weeks. I've noticed contams start on some of mine after 3-4 weeks of room temp storage with pasty plates wouldn't you want to put blank plates in the fridge for storage of like more than a month.

If you’re seeing contams on blank plates after 2-3 weeks they were insufficiently sterilized and should not be used. Increase your sterilization times.

Unless something went wrong with those specific plates I don't think it was sterilization issues I'm pretty ocd about sterilization same way I've done hundreds of plates I just wrap them and put them in the fridge now when I want to store for over a month to be safe.

A couple questions:
1.) Should the pasty plate be completely covered in foil? It was hard to tell in the picture if the bottoms were covered as well. Coming from doing the BRF tek, I was under the impression that just the lids needed to be covered.
2.) Should we have a solid half inch or so of agar in the plate, or do we just need to cover the bottom?
Thanks.

If you're storing the plates in room temp, should the foil be removed or left on?

1. no 2. cover bottom 3. leave foil on until you ready to use them. leave foil off after inoculating.

Hey Pasty,
I know this TEK is getting a bit dated but it still looks fun and from what I can see, foolproof aside from user error.
I do have a newb Q.
If I don't have a PC and can't afford one currently, could I still get away with it in a normal pot, the same as I use for my BRF jars?
At least until I can save up for a decent PC. I don't know much about PC's for this hobby as I have never used one personally. I have a friend with several fairly expensive ones but I don't want to pay as much as they did for theirs even though they're very nice and I'm sure were worth every penny once they got their biggest grows out of it.

Maybe like me? In hopes to find an answer, I don't feel the need to dig through 300+ pages to find if Pasty or some other trusted cultivator can see the bumped thread, question, and hopefully give an answer to even if they have at some point in this big ass thread. I'm sure they would understand..or I'd like to think so.

Do you mind telling me where you get your dishes? Only really interested if they're already pre-made. If so, I would love to have a trusted vendor for this.

Im not a tc but I like to think I know what I'm talking about you can steam sterilize agar. But you might struggle going to grain after that. I recommend getting a presto. Mine has lasted me years.
I got it years before the pandemic when they were 65bux. Idk what they run nowadays.
You can get pre-poured plates but its highly recommended to make things yourself from scratch.
You can learn more and find where the issue lies instead of guessing if it was you or the vendor.

Makes sense. I just wish I had a cheap yet sufficient PC all these years lol. I just never got around to buying one because when I wasn't growing I obviously didn't need it and when I did grow I just did BRF but I want to start this ASAP.
This pandemic bs definitely isn't helping my cause.
