Could also be how long you simmered it? If you simmer it too long or too hard you will end up boiling off too much water.

It looked like that from the start? What ratios did you use exactly?

2.5 grams agar, 2 tsp potato flake, and 1/2cup water. haven't added the honey yet i didn't think that would effect the texture much

So you simmered it for 10 min which is pretty long but it should have dissolved in with ease, just like jello. There is no way it should have come out like that. What kind of agar are you using? Powder, bars, etc?

Same happened to me except I was using powder agar. I just added more water and more potato flakes until it became the thick syrupy consistency I was looking for. I'm still unsure if that batch of plates is working though. They definitely set correctly after I made eyeballed adjustments, just not sure if anything is gonna grow on it.

add me to the list of people who ended up with a paste instead of a liquid: however I used powered agar from a health food store so I chocked it up to that and not your tek. added more water and a little more potato flakes and it was perfect.
thanks for the tek pasty. ill post back when i've actually done some work with them

I'm about to noc some grain from my first agar work. Got a bonehead question.
How do I loosen the agar from the mini round enough to dump into the jar?
Do I just use a sterilized knifed and dig it out? Feels like it'll break up if I do.

Editing the thread title made it appear kind of weird in my threads list lol. I was like "Pasty's WHAT? DON'T LEAVE ME HANGING!"

if u don't have a blade then yea. i had to use a butter knife only once for a spore swipe and it took forever to get red hot.

I poured some of these a little thick.. that's not gonna be a problem is it?

This was the batch that turned into mashed potato consistency first and I just eyeballed until I thought it felt right. (how I knew what right was, having only done it once before and failing miserably that time, I have no idea) but they're colonizing now and looking good, seems to be a good balance of firmness going on.
Didn't realize the food coloring I had had sugar in it though until it was too late. But I'll be damned if that's not the bluest agar you ever saw.
whoa the zoom really brings my thumb hairs to life.

Get a scalpel if your working with agar Xacto Knives work great too and get #11 blades They flame sterilize quickly but if you have to, find something metal long and thin butter knife should work pretty well with a torch
i thank thee pastywhite and company
