I start it on med/low to get it warmed up, then up it to med/high until it reaches pressure. Of course this will be a little different for every stove.

Sure you can use any recipe you want. I completely recommend rotating your media. Get a bunch in the mix

you made this is so incredibly easy i'm shocked i was ever standoffish before... the idea of less pouring in sterile conditions is shocking. i'm just afraid of the ability to pop the lid when the time comes now... wish me luck and thanks for the inspiration and amazing speed with your help. to this community and thanks again i guess i missed this part Quote:

Now you have lots of cheap, easy to work with plates that don't need to be ordered and can be put together with stuff you can find around town. You can now safely inoculate any media like grains or LC without the issue of invisible contams. You can also store good cultures for a long time and grow them many times before senescence hits. You can also ward this off by changing your media, this tek ends up making PDA (potato dextrose agar) but it will work just as well with MEA (malt extract agar), PDYA (potato dextrose yeast agar), Dog food agar, grain soak water agar, etc. So don't be afraid to mix it up. Hopefully this lets people dip their toes in the agar pool, trust me its well worth it

so what is people's preferred amounts for agar agar and lme and water... it seems people have varying opinions. I'm not looking for a overly nutritious agar more so a fast performer. any opinion is appreciated where can i find lme or elme in a store near me? Edit and update: Got extra light malt extract from an online brewery store... found that most people for a basic mix go with just 10g agar agar to 10g malt extract to 500ml of water.

Thanks! I wasn't sure where to start with Agar. This helps tremendously.

I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but I have been using screw tops, and have yet to encounter a plate to cont. on the agar by itself a week after I pc'd.A little bit more work, but I would have to say, they probably will last longer in the long run, but that is barely an issue here, personal preference is what it boils down to IMO, althought I would have to say the screw tops technically should last longer, at what the price of the snap tops boil down to, I don't think ANYONE can do any complaining on either, Thanks again Pasty for yet ANOTHER helpful idea, this guy is full of them!
I have to add, I just unscew the lids slightly, to keep them from crushing, and it works out great, althought it would be better to drill a hole in the top(I have had a few get water in them, but from what I can remember, its always the last one inserted, that is not loaded correctly, very sideways, and it always is overfilling pc, makig the dish malformed), per Pasty's tek, but I would also like to be able to use these for work lunches, and not have to worry about spillage. I know, cheap SOB,LOL.
I would also like to add, I do not let cool very much, and once I open lid(to pc, after slightly lifting weight to make sure there is no pressure, even thought gauge reads zero psi, you would be surprised), I hurry up and screw lids tight, then throw in SAB or other enclosed tote to cool.
Do I see a TC tag in Pastywhite's future, I most def. would have to say yes, he just got missed, along with a few others this time around, IMO!

I do the same, except for double the recipe of what you have(I like to pour my plates deeper), and add two grams of nutritional yeast powder (that's what GG&MM called out for, and is the difference in MYA, and MEA), but now it is recommended a different type, but this works fine, IME, I think the kind recommended now just dissolves better.
The first time I ordered, I did not know there was a diff. in the malt powders, so I ordered barry fams barley malt, and it works fine, just is a little darker, IME. I now have both kinds, and as stated, see no difference in performance, just clarity.

I've been using the ziplok xs bowls and liking them a lot. They are wider but i can see through them better and they stack up very well in the pc, on the shelf and in the fridge. I didn't put a folded paper towel on top of the lids of some just to find out and sure enough water got onto and soaked through the filter. DON"T SKIP THAT STEP. Just an alternative for anyone interested and i may be trying the screw top ones you mentioned, are they the rubbermaid ones?

The ziploc bowls work pretty good I only have two complaints with them myself. The larger size means I can't fit as many in my fridge and the paper towel won't stay on after you unwrap it which is not a big deal, I just like writing/labeling the culture on the paper towel. It is fairly functional tho.
@travelingout, glad you took the plunge into agar. It will open doors for you in this hobby and getting started is the biggest step. Great stuff

NO, they are glad and ziplock, I caught some ziplocks small(1 pint) on sale for $2.40.
@Pasty, sorry for barging in on your thread buddy, I just thought the more info, the more we can get people trying this, which as you stated is the biggest step. I do believe the community benefited so much from this thread, way to go Pasty

Anyone who wants to help out people trying this out is more than welcome to chime in provided their info is good This thread was made for the community and I am happy to see them getting involved. There has been some great input by many people on this topic and I am just happy to see people helping others. If I just wanted to keep this thing a one man show, I just would have never posted it.

Nice agar tek for beginners 45 mins in a PC is way too much though. 15 mins is all you need

I agree 45 min is probably overkill. I go for about 20-25 in my sterilizer. But if your pc is a POS and your concerned that its not getting up to 15 then 45 min won't hurt nothing but could save some grief.

Have a question about agar consistency, first time trying it i tried your ratios at the beginning of the tek, and i ended up with this. What in the world did i do wrong have closer to red mashed potatoes.
