Cakes are pretty fucking fast with LI. I got me some one litre cakes going right now, they took a little while just based on how large they are but they are nearly done

Exactly! I couldn't agree more.
I do my SAB work in front of a mirror and when I'm waiting for the air currents to settle after putting an arm in I look up at myself sometimes and laugh at how much I look like a scientist in a laboratory - except I'm in a bedroom.

I noc'd up 5 1/2 pints with LI and they started pretty slow. I think it's because I had them out in my living room near the glass door where it probably gets 50F at night. I put them in my 70F room and they're going much quicker now and the mycelium looks WAY stronger than my MS syringe BRF cakes do. Like they're big circles of rhizomorphic myc instead of slow, cow-style patterns.

As a kid I had a "mad scientist" kit lol. I had a microscope and everything. In retrospect it was a horrible kit, but awesome back then!

Lmfao! I can only imagine what that must look like. I've done it shirtless a couple of times while wearing tyvik arm sleeves, gloves and a surgical mask. It's a damn strange look I'll say that for it. Almost like some bizarre sex fetish costume.

Ha! I love how I would never talk about my procedure as it was "unorthadox" and yet I talk to people all the time who do it exactly the way I do

I have a two room bathroom separated by a sliding door. A lot of the time i take a shower then go to the room where my sink/mirror/SAB is and do my work naked. seems like the cleanest way to do it lol. I know everyone says bathrooms are super dirty but mine is probably the cleanest place in my house.

I just wanted to jump in on this colossal thread to say I went to the store tonight to pick up two packs of rounds, 'Karo' and some potato flakes.
I forgot food colouring, dammit!
This tek has inspired me to attempt agar again.
(Not sure where the penicillium came from in my previous runs but I got good feelings for this run!)
Although I lost my old pressure cooker and could only replace it with a digital one, settings are High/Low and a timer, so I'm going to attempt to break up the time and do ten minutes on low to start, then switch to high. Hopefully that works out for me.
Y'all may now resume discussing dissecting in your socks.

Hahaha! Ok ok, I guess I just need to buy out a buy a few supplies and just do the agar agar then! I had figured most of you guys had some dedicated area to do it.

I do now but you can make anything work if you have to. I once made a set of spore prints using a large ziplock bag insted os an SAB. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I am learning that as we speak. I am hoping my next 5 jars turn out okay but I may have my first contamination on my hands. Aside from slow growth, I have had a decent start to mycology. If all goes well with these cakes, it's agar agar for this guy! All I need now is proper spore syringes as the ones I bought seem a bit iffy and almost finished (I believe they are old).

Having food color or not isn't a deal breaker. You are free to proceed without the food coloring.
Your infection either came from a lack of sterile procedure, your inoculm, or you didn't sterilize your agar media correctly.

Ugh, man, I accidentally dropped a pretty large spore glob from my syringe into one of my plates. I just shook it up a bit until I could see some spores and then intended to give it a single drop, went overboard but only by 2-3 drops, and somehow, a giant wad of them went directly onto the agar and is plainly visible. I'm certain the syringe is still good since I still see tons of spores in there but I wonder what this agar is going to do... I guess it's not too different from just swabbing a visible amount of spores on it right?
I would've used a print but syringes were cheaper for some reason. I can only assume because a syringe uses a small fraction of a print's spores and therefore selling syringes is much more profitable.

dude, go look at my grow. I have enormous clumps of B+ and AA+ on agar and they are germinating. one of the big clumps just formed a white patch in the middle of it today. My KSSS plates were also accidentally squirted on, but no visible spores.

Cool, my only concern now is that there may be too much moisture in that plate. But it was one I made a week or two ago and all the condensation had since worked itself out.
Also, for anyone who saw that loop thing I made, I finally got to use it in my new SAB and my new torch and it was the shiiit. I bet my contam rate drops tremendously. 3 tool upgrades can do that sometimes though. Not to mention I invested in a tyvek suit finally too.

Ya, I nearly drowned my ksss plate, and its doing fine. it was my very first plate, ever, and I just plunged the shit out of it, not thinking. Lots of good growth, nothing bad, yet. I was waiting to see if it would colonize all over at once, or what, but I got like a dozen colonization spots or so.

That sounds really difficult to know where you want to transfer from. I guess you could try from all different spots.
I got some AA+ on one plate and I probably need to make some more so I can put down some PF classic as well, since I have some.
I may just plain need more plates, actually.

Right?!
I think I will stick to prints. I don't see much use for syringes in my future, anyway. My roommate might start his own oyster grow, so I might gift them to him.
