Just make sure the lids are also polypropylene. There have been a few members here who ordered no-pour containers (that were PP) but the lids were a different plastic and they melted in the pc.
If you're using malt extract you don't need the honey.
A pretty standard mea recipe is- 30 g Malt extract, 20 g Agar, 1 L water.
45 minutes is a long pc cycle for agar, I usually do 25, some go as low as 15 min.

So I see the Tek write up mentioned you could use powered agar. Could one use powdered sea weed based agar from the health food store for this Tek? And would you add the flakes and karo still to it?

it's fine. Just double check that agar has nothing added to it.

Thanks for this great info. I didn’t even think about the lids. They do look to be a different color. I just read a ton of reviews on the website that I bought them from and it looks like they get a little “melty” when they are on the bottom shelf of a dish washer. I canceled my order and I’m just going to use my BRF glass jars instead. No problems with those in the PC. LOL
I thought 45 mins sounded a little on the high side. I will shoot for 20min.
Thanks for the agar recipe. I have to ask about everything at this point since I’m a rookie.

Make some videos as its the best way to show your technique. Trust me, if you get your habits right first off its easier.

Upon inspection of the plates today I noticed a bit of sediment at the bottom. I'm most likely going to make another set tonight so I'll try and take pictures of my process. Guessing I didn't heat it long enough to dissolve all the powdered agar or potato flakes. I used another container I saw recommended in this thread, didn't think about the larger area and the plates got poured a bit thin. What is the optimal depth of the agar when filling the containers?

Depth isn't a,huge factor. Too much and itll be swampy and too little it will dry. Pda has always been murky for me. Shouldn't be a problem

I have fully colonized Pasty plates, are there any ways to save plates for a long time for later usage? Long time as in a year. I'm planning on just putting them in a fridge. Would that be okay?

the fridge is what you do but you should pour them thicker so they dont dry up while in storage. I have an older dried up plate of APE, Im told it will revive on new agar once transferred. but yes put them in the fridge.

So I actually heard from a friend that the Glad rounds and the deli cups are porous surfaces and as you wash them after each use they can get micro-scratches that harbor bacteria and that they are more prone to contams because of that.
I don't know how much of that is bullshit, but I wanted to get a second opinion on it here

You sterilize the container... They do become a bitch to clean if you scratch em, but cleaning is not sterilizing and vice versa

plus after you "clean" them you add your agar and PC them so that gets most all other nasties killed off.

If you are putting them in the fridge i would highly recommend putting them in a new ziplock bag first. A thick one, either the storage or the freezer type ziplocks, not the sandwich or snack type.

Ok guys and gals I made a couple of adjustments to my original plans. I forgot that I had some agar from Stamets on that fungi website so I have ditched the telephone agar/light malt extract recipe. I also ditched the polypropylene deli containers because I read some reviews that said they get melty on the bottom shelf of a dishwasher.
I’m using my old BRF 8oz Jars from VERONES and getting some KERR jars that are a little wider and flater. Both jars are smooth and clear to see the mycelium easier from the side. My first agar endeavors are for getting more from MS syringes. Hopefully I will be able to get a quart jar of spawn from a couple drops of spores into each agar jar. I know this will take longer to get my spawn but the cost savings will be worth it in the end. I’m tired of paying $7 for 1lb of sterilized rye spawn and using 2cc of solution for $4.50. That’s $11.50 for 1lb of spawn and that does 1 20qt mini mono.
2 drops of spores to 1 agar jar to 1 quart of spawn sounds like a lot better option to me.
Thanks again to Pasty for introducing this easy Tek.
