Theses pics were taken through the lids.

I have not been able to find anything like this in my area for about 2 months now, either they are discontinued here or someone is buying them up as fast as they come available. You have some nice looking growth.

Those are really good ideas, I'll keep them in mind if I feel it's necessary. Right now I just peek through the arm holes from a distance if I need to see something more clearly.

I'll have to try these out for sure, I'm not super crazy about the glad containers having used them once already.

Thanks doc! I actually dumped them and my jars of bacteria last night and washed them out real good with hot soapy water.

For future reference, open contaminated containers in a sink or bucket with either soapy water or bleach water, it will help keep from spreading spores throughout your home or wherever you do your myco stuff.

Nate,
If you keep running into issues, posting a video of your agar work is super helpful early on. You'll definitely be fucking up for a minute when you're new, but uploading videos of SAB sessions early on really helped me eliminate bad habits quickly. Also you shouldn't be spraying the ceiling of your SAB, fwiw.

Opening outside in open air is going to blow spores all over you and you will carry them back inside.

Thanks stare! I'll do one this weekend so y'all can let me know what I'm doing wrong. Although this time I do believe my contam vector was my syringe since I had used it to do 10 brf jars and didn't get a single bit of mycelium growth in any of them. The plates were just to confirm my suspicions.
I didn't know about not spraying the top, I feel all the teks didn't specify that or maybe I just overlooked it. But now I know.

I'll keep that in mind. The air was calm last night so I'm not worried about it this time.

Simmer on the stove for a bit then pour into the mini rounds. I usually pour about a 1/4" thick or so.
They always set up fine and the mycelium grows good for me.
any kind of malt extract will work OK I assume? Thanks for helping out a noob.

You can use any malt extract, light malt is used by many because the agar is clear when you use it. Other malt extracts can make the agar opaque, but work just as good. I buy mine at a beer/wine brewing supply store and my agar at the local Asian market.

i actually like darker agar. it makes it easier for me to see what's growing. i put food coloring in it just to make sure it isn't clear.

I put blue instead of green in my CFA this time in my pasty plate, I think I'll stick to the green food coloring. The blue coloring makes it looks dark green trichish color.... fuck.... it'll work, just looks fucky I guess

Epic tek / thread
I more or less made pastyplates too without really using this tek i think, but this method is really thorough
Also @ food coloring: I label my agar recipes with different colors (can make all colors) as a bonus so that i can write smaller labels.
I still prefer my petri dishes generally cause more can fit in my PC but yea.
WHhy the fuck aren't there more PP or better petri dishes designed to be reused but also cheap..

Didn't read the whole thread, maybe someone else noticed this. I wanted to try to get away from my glass Petri hassle, only brand around here was Ziplock PP5. Same size as Glad. Cooled pour looks real nice, but there was a differential in the expansion/contraction between the clear container and blue cap (vented w/SFD), so the caps won't seal again. Salvageable w/UV-treated Parafilm but not ideal. Time to shop online for the OP's brands. BTW, I'm just an old mushy who found this site. This is my 1st ever on-line web post (scary).

And much easier to remove the lids in the SAB when they are looser.

Some of the plates I got have been put through atleast 20 cycles. They start showing wear and tear but can be used. About 20-25% I have can’t be used anymore though. I still prefer these pp5 dishes as opposed to others. I guess I tend to push my plates more lol.
