Yeah the phone was about 6-8 in. above it. So is the general consensus bacteria or should I wait and see?

That's a nice and easy option, just replace what I would use the potato flakes with potato water? Same weight /amount?
Thanks

Thanks tryp I'll toss em outside when I get home from work. I'll probably toss the jars and redo them this weekend as well since all of the plates went bacterial right where the spore solution dropped there's no way anything good is in those jars.

Ahh that makes perfect sense. I didn't want the lid off for too long so I popped it off with one hand and snapped the photo with the other real quick. But I think I like your way better, don't even put the phone in the SAB.

This is the way you use pasty plates. On their side or upside down.

Pasty plate with 1% agar powder and 1% malt per volume.
This is Rustywhyte culture as well. I think it's ready to chew through a grain jar soon.

They are so hard to take a good picture of. I believe this is a clean culture though!

What if you put a clean piece of saran wrap over the top before putting the lid on? Or is Saran wrap not sterile?

It might work. Probably not though. It's a vector for contamination that I would want to avoid. I'm not in this for a photo OP! Lol.

I meant for your own convenience to be able to see it better. But I suppose you're right, I mean imagine trying to tear off a piece of saran wrap inside a sab. Lol

It wouldn't be convenient. When I first got started, I drilled a small hole in the top of my SAB about the size of my phone camera lens. I'd line it up, open the PP for a second, and snap a couple pics. Don't recall things contaminating from that, but it's unnecessary when you get better at spotting contams. You can just eyeball it through the plastic and make a final decision before transferring.

I would think having an extra hole in the top of my sab JUST for taking pictures would be incredibly inconvenient and cause lots of contams. But what do I know I'm just a dumb noob who doesn't listen to anyone's advice

Yes, the hole gets covered with tape when you're not taking pictures. Most totes are probably clear enough to zoom through the plastic though.

I can see why they (sab's) are not clear enough to see through if you sprayed the inside with soapy water or iso before you started. It would be like trying to look through a pasty plate with the lid on. Lol

Spitball jedi built a sab with plexiglass in the front. You could do the same for the top.

my sab has a glass window on the front. i got really tired really quickly trying to identify shit through a semi clear-foggy plastic wall.

I like these dollar store containers for pastyplates, the lids are flat and really clear-

Theses pics were taken through the lids.

did you just opened your plate to snap a pic?
This definitely bacterial, not mushroom mycelium.
