I was thinking about putting a RTV injection port in theses and using synthetic filter discs. Anybody ever used these with injection ports?

do not do that vestigial shit. do everything upside down and squirt or slice directly into the container without an added vector of a shitty n00b ship.

Squirting upside-down seems, well seems retarded. would it not make more sense to put a small drop on the media right side up?

when you use pasty plates the lid stays on the cookie rack. when you grab the plate you have it facing side ways towards the sab opening. look at munchauzens videos on using pasty plates.

Can anyone tell me if potato flakes with added pepper/milk soilds would be ok? It says 95% potato. Can't seem to find anywhere else where I can buy pure potato flakes.
Would these extra ingredients cause any problems?
thanks

for sure it will cause problems later on. just use fresh potatoes.

Buy a pound of dry malt extract from a homebrew store or online. It's cheap and it will last a super long time. The agar comes out a lot clearer than tater flakes too.

Ah, that'd be nice and easy. Will I just boil up some potatoes and add a mash to the agar instead of flakes? Could also try and dry some out myself. Could be an option.
Thanks guys.

Can I just replace the flakes with pretty much the same amount of malt extract? Didn't know malt had starch? Or it just acts as a good replacement? Sorry I'm a noob

I have good luck using 1% on both agar and malt. If I'm making a batch of 12 or 15 Pastys I will start with 300ml of tap water and add in 3g each of agar powder and dry malt extract. Simmer on the stove for a bit then pour into the mini rounds. I usually pour about a 1/4" thick or so.
They always set up fine and the mycelium grows good for me.

What kind of agar/malt are you using? For me 1% is too soft and causes weak growth

If you want to use potatoes just dice a bunch up, boil em, save the water and eat the taters. Then use the water.

Yeah I opened it in my SAB. I have 5 more plates that are showing the same type of growth. This one was just the most pronounced.
The whole point of the plates was to see if this syringe was bunk or not because I used it to knock up 10 jars about a week and a half ago and haven't gotten any growth so I wasn't sure if my mixture was too dry or if the spores were no good.

It shouldn't be an issue since you were in the sab, I've done it, but shit can happen. My son spilled something in my lab and I didn't know it, I kept getting contamination from the same contaminate, I pulled everything out to scrub it down and found a 1 square foot patch of penicillium under a small end table, it was growing on Gatorade. Once it was gone, everything was back to normal.

That's definitely bacteria. Also, you dont want ANYTHING above your media. Even in the sab. Unless you can flame sterilize your camera you will contaminate it
