Whether it's powdered or bar doesn't matter, but the ingredients do. There's little packets of powdered agar at markets that have sugars added to them since people use it to eat. Make sure it's straight agar.

I'm sure it's on one of these pages, but I can't find the solution to crushed plates. Every batch I make has 1 or 2 pastys sucked in on the bottom, any solution?

They usually get crushed if they pull a vacuum. Too much restriction on the GE hole is usually the problem. Did you use a smaller hole than 1/4”

The hole is a bit small on some of them so it seems that was the problem. Much appeciated!!!

EDIT: one little thing I am confused about - the Agar Agar which I can buy is all powdered form, does this matter?
If you read the op I mention that you can use powdered agar and I even give measurements in volume for powdered agar to help those who lack a scale. Cheers
Thanks man, sorry I missed it, I've managed to find some agar agar without the added sugars and stuff! So that's good. Just gotta wait for it to arrive. Managed to find some containers but they're a bit bigger than normal, and also some rectangle ones. Going to give them both a go and see how it goes.
I'm excited! This should be heaps of fun, going to go collect some mycelium from somewhere and try and grow it. Need to make myself a SAB next.

Just wanted to come in and say thanks for the tutorial. I did my first plates there where some that had bacteria. And one lone one that grew myc. I then made more plates and just did 1plate to 9 others. They are growing good. I will then drop the tiger drop into each bag of pre sterilized rye berry bags i have .
Thanks everyone. I am on to my new passion. If you fail try again and again and again. You learn more from trial and error than gettig lucky the first go around.

cut of one's jib One's general appearance or personality, as in I don't like the cut of Ben's jib. In the 17th century the shape of the jib sail often identified a vessel's nationality, and hence whether it was hostile or friendly. The term was being used figuratively by the early 1800s, often to express like or dislike for someone.

... It crossed my mind that maybe I should "sleeve" and "de-sleeve" in the SAB with gloves and propper sterile procedures?
Im sure thats been discussed But I somehow missed it And thought id mention it here.
I cut the sleeve of petries open in the SAB before I open the agar bottle. I usually do 30, which fits in my SAB snugly. I desleeve, open bottle halfway, split 10 stack into 5 stacks, open and pour bottom to top. when the agars finished, I pull the bottle out, wait 2-5 mins, re-apply alcohol gel to hands (sometimes I pour so hot my gloves get warm and dry, and cooling them down a touch helps comfort-wise) and pour the next stack.
For no Pour I just pop em in the SAB after cooking, and nocc up asap, with wedges, spore solution, or LC I'm testing.
I appreciate the tips, Mani P.
The lure of increased visibilty is strong...
But these Pastey Plates have me hooked with their user friendliness and re-usability!
I'll give petris another go later on. But for now, the more familiar I get with these Pastys, the better my eyes get...

I'm looking to get into agar very soon and have all my supplies, just need to build my SAB. Anyways when it comes to inoculating the agar does it matter if the agar is set up or not?

If it's not set up it's probably hot enough to kill whatever you're putting on it. It only takes a few minutes to set up.

Thanks! That makes perfect sense. I wasn't sure if it took a while like jello or if it needed to be refrigerated prior to inoculation.

it's really hard to tell from those pictures. pasty plates are hard for me to see in even in real life. if you are unsure the best thing you can do is make another transfer and see what grows. you could even take a picture of it with the lid off (after you transfer) and give us a better look
