if the sloshy liquid has nutrients in it you'll still get growth. myc grows in liquid perfectly fine. it wouldn't work for transferring and cleaning but you could certainly work with it if you wanted

I'm getting ready to start trying agar and have been assembling my materials. I started practicing opening the mini rounds and found it very difficult to open them one handed. I use the 1 cup rounds for food storage and the lids are not nearly as tight. Would it help to prepare the rounds with a little vegetable oil on the edge of the round in contact with the lid? Or does PCing the rounds loosen them up? Any tricks and tips appreciated.

They will loosen up after a few runs in the PC.

Thanks, Pasty. Would never considered agar without your TEK.

How many times do you use the glad dishes before you throw them out? I've noticed that the lids get extremely loose on most of them after PC'ing, so ill usually buy new dishes every time i make a batch of plates.

They're easier to use when they're loose. I've never tossed one. The few that are super duper loose, I'll usually just put a strip of Parafilm around it.

Ive only thrown them out when i lose a lid or one gets mangled somehow. They all work fine 3 and a half years later

Thanks for sharing that Cable. I've wondered if it was necessary to boil the agar/nutes in the saucepan first myself. I mean it was going to get hot and boil in the PC cycle next right?. I just never got around to trying it.
It seems like I'm always on a time crunch when it comes to myco work.

I am glad I found this Tek, good one thumbs up
Question: Can I steam them instead of PC them? how would that work out?

You could steam em but be aware that you will need much longer times. I would do at least 70 min and see how they do. Elevation will play a role. Finally you really should get a PC cause agar and grain are a nice combo.

I bought a PC which didn't have a rack so the problem I'm having is that the plates start floating around as the minimum water level is too high. I stacked them 3 high, but then I noticed they were full of water. Somebody have any suggestion as to what kind of object I could use to get the plates to sit high and dry...

PirateSwazey said: I do 50lb bag of rye, unwashed, in a 30 gallon pot. Soak 12-24 hours, bring to 200 degrees or to the start of boiling, big thing is to not pop grains. No gypsum. Ball valve at bottom of pot to drain water. Scoop out with a gallon scooper, throw onto big home made strainer over box fans. Stir for 10 min on strainer until outside of grains are dry. Load 4qts per bag. I use .5 micron unicorn bags, and pre seal them before sterilizing for 2.5 hours.
Pic of strainer:

This tek makes 16-18 4qt spawn bags at one time.
pretty much the same as above but involves bringing the grain up to 200. this hydrates them a bit more and allows them to cool faster due to evaporation.

Pc'd 17 plates today. I like to give them a few days to let the condensate chill out.

I just did 5 mini rounds tonight but when i lifted the paper towel my tape looked like it it melted a bit.
I used nexus transpore tape any thoughts should i put one more layer on them before i remove the paper towel completly?
I will wait a couple of days so the condensation to clear.
