What should I use to scrape the spores on to the qtips I’ll be using? This will be my first time and I want to do it right. I have some metal racks I’ll be using to keep the plates off the surface. I hear opening/inoculating the plates upside down is the way to go.
I feel like a noob again, but I should have started this a long time ago.
Sounds like you got some good work ahead of you plurfekt
The swab will pick them up by itself. Just sterilize it and swab the print

Aesome! I sterlized some in my pc wrapped in tinfoil. Just hope the spores come up on to the qtip. Thanks for the info guys, I’ll check out the vids.

So I watched the video and his agar was liquid compared to my plates when I poured them. Mine was like a snot clumpy agar. Is it going to be to thick? If so I may just restart the plates. What’s better for spores, thick agar or soft agar?

They will, spores are light and qtips have lots of surface area to get stuck on. I think you either let the agar cool too much or didn't heat it enough. There's only one way to know if it works spores like softer agar, just dont make it too soft, you'll pick up agar instead of dropping spores

Dang I might have to remake the agar. Mine was like a cream of wheat consistency instead of watery. Is it still worth a try using the plates or should I just restart? I’ll be doing it this evening if you recommend it with the consistency I have. If not I’ll just redo them when I have another day off.

I cant tell you if you should use them or not, until i lnow what they look like post pc. Can you flip then with the agar staying on yhe bottom? If so use it. If its too soft start over. Its not a huge deal if youre making the swab yourself, i ruined a perfectly good pe swab with too soft agar

One thing I've noticed is if you make the agar softer, and you barely use ANY in each mini-round, they do not pop out of the bottoms tiger style unless you warp the plastic/they kinda stick on there.
So I guess my input would be, if you intend to tiger drop, make the depth a smidge deeper - or be prepared to fuss with your minirounds. The one I bent up for that reason is the only warped one I have so far, if I haven't tossed it already.

So I feel like they were to stiff to be honest. I’m going to order a inoculation loop and try again later. Sucks, but I’m learning from my mistakes.

Cool I'll look into it. Been having good results with premium MEA at different ratios already, softened up the recipe advised by the shroomery sponsor.

Cool cool I’ll give it another go soon enough. I’ll watch your vid Munch and use that recipe. Ordering the loop today and will probably get a chance to use it next weekend.

Made some pasty plates a week or so ago for my first run with agar. Used spore syringe to the first set then transferred about two or three days ago. How does this look to you guys? First transfer There’s four of them they all look about like this. It’s hard to get good pictures through plastic

What do you mean...that's a great picture for a pasty plate :P
Only thing you can do for visibility is hold them up to a light looking at the bottoms, at least, I find that most effective, but this would be difficult to take pictures of for someone with shaky hands.
Mine are about 1-2 days ahead but look exactly the same as yours. These are fun, right? XD

They are definitley fun! I made 8 more the other day and they are sitting in the SAB waiting to transfer these. It’s kind of hard what to look for contamination wise because all I see is clean white mycelium. I’ll probably do another transfer just to make sure it’s clean but I’m not sure if contams would me highly visible. Maybe it’s just clean lol but I’m sure it’s hard to spot bacteria for my untrained eyes.

One of the first plates I had directly from spores I did notice some nasty mold spots and that was easy to spot for sure. As far as other hidden contams go I guess it’s just learning as you go.

I love the pasty plates... Only real complaint is the visibility.
I just ordered these; super high hopes. These are the 2 .oz variety, but also come in 4 .oz and higher.
