Hey guys I want to start agar today and was wondering how to use half pint wide mouths as my plates. I got plastic lids for them, do I need to drill a hole on top for Ge so my jar doesn’t shatter? I want to start up 8 plates with the jars. Is it the same pc time and agar prep or would I need a longer run or more agar than for the mini rounds?
I’ll be using a few spore prints I got from trades. Someone told me to individually wrap qtips in tinfoil and run them through the PC with my plates. I will be swabbing the prints to get a little bit of spores to streak the plates with. Is this a good method? Want to make sure I’m doing it right.

All you need to do is make sure they aren't on all the way. Like 1/4 turn back from tight. Tighten them when you take them out. Other than the fact you don't need any mods everything is the same

It'll work for sure. I prefer to use an inoc loop though so I don't have to get close to the print

Get a blackhead popper. I bet they're cheaper. And you don't have to change out wire

Only slightly cheaper. You can get some pretty good deals on loops and extra wire. But savings are savings

Yeah that part is nice, but they are a pain in the ass to work with. Even with quarter pints. Haven't tried with mini rounds personally but they are clearly much more ergonomic and sterile technique friendly.

personally, I just wrap individual qtips in foil, put em in a very small glass jar and pop em in the pc with whatever it is yoire doing then use accordingly,
been prospecting also of doing half pints glass for agar..

they work nicely. but get the clear ones without the design on the outside for a bit more visibility + plastic one piece lids.

Thanks for the tips guys! I might stick with the mini rounds for now since they do seem like they would be more sterli since you don’t have to unscrew them. Haven’t started yet, but I intend to soon!

They were out of mini rounds so I picked up these ziploc square ones. I can fit 9 per level and stack them 5 high, so I can fit 45 in one cycle. pretty cool.

i tried the glass no pours and pasty plates i like pasty plates because i can fit 12 in a six qt shoebox six of the half pint no pours fit in a shoebox space is a bit of an issue for me
i liked how light and easy it was to remove the tops of the pasty's
both worked fine i just bought 24 more mini rounds to try witht the side hole because i dont like putting foil on the every mini round

After a little break from things, I am jumping back in again and starting everything from agar this go around. PC'd some pasty plates last night and a couple of the dishes managed to become lopsided resulting in agar that solidified lopsided instead of flat.
How important is it for the agar to be flat? Wouldn't it still function the same basically?

You're fine, my first turned out like this because I let them cool inside the PC'er. I can't speak for others but it makes a lot more sense for me to allow mine to cool in my SAB/allow the micropore tape to dry.
Pretty sure they'd grow even if they were at a 90 degree angle, although not ideal. You're fine.

Thanks for the input. That's basically what I was thinking. I can't see it making much difference so long as the recipe is prepared correctly and they are PC'd properly, unless there is something I'm missing.
I use the ones with screw top lids, so there is no micropore tape or filters to dry, just loose lids to screw tight.
I leave them in the PC to cool because of convenience, and sometimes because I have to wait a bit to setup the SAB and I'd rather keep them in a sterile environment until then.
I don't really give any fucks about condensation, so far

As long as you don't screw the caps on while they are still hot and create a vacuum in the containers you should be doing agar just like any of us.
