If youre sterilizing an empty glass jar just put the lid on and tighten down like you would for canning.

Ah, the mason jar is what threw me off
Was starting to think I shouldn't post in the mornings, lmao.
Don't feel bad man, I've been at this hobby a long time and my agar media bottles aren't even prepped yet, with everything I could ever need for agar work!

This seems like a decent place to post this. I grabbed two 6oz boxes of the regular agar yesterday for like 5 bucks. Never seen the flavored kinds before.

QM: The flavored kind is shit and has additives. You want straight up agar-agar powder or agar-agar brick. The brick type you coffee grind is perfect.
JIM: If yo want to use glass containers/large plastic containers follow
these teks https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24109801 https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14788118
I hope you are using widemouth 1/2 pints. Reg mouth is gonna be hard dexterity wise to slice up agar.
Edit: fixed the second link

Just realized this tek recommends pc'ing for 40-45 minutes, whereas bod's agar tek for a pour bottle says to go 20 minutes and no more than 30-45 minutes. Is there something about plates that makes them need a little more time, or is it just personal preference? I might do some experimenting with 20-30 minutes to compare.

The reason is that if you are using media that contains insoluble media like potato flakes or grain water, or if it has high populations extra time is needed. Bodhi knows his shit but I feel that an extra 15 min is worth not having to order lab grade media or worry about having all your plates go bacterial in 4 days.
I tried a run once with Grain water agar and potato flake agar for 25 min at 20 psi and had it all go bacterial 4 days later. For the sake of 20 min I lost 4 days and almost lost a culture as well.

I cooked agar in no pours for a year before I knew I needed to vent my pc.

That makes sense. I'm trying to get premix to work so I'm definitely going to experiment with less time in case I'm having caramelization issues. It all being a powder means it mixes clearly and evenly pretty easily, so that's not an issue. If/when I switch over to mixing my own ingredients I'll tinker around with bumping up the time.

You're talking about letting the steam vent for 10 minutes before putting the weight on, right? Don't vent the PC to relieve pressure at the end of the cooking cycle.
You vent the steam at the beginning to get all the air out. You do that whether you're making grain jars, agar, or canning beets.

So what is the current state of the art on the filters on these?
Just two layers of micropore tape, and NO polyfil?
