Agreed Tom, I tossed all my jar rings because they were rusted af and staining my pc. I'm using a mesh strainer that came with one of my crock pots. Fits the bottom perfectly and just the height of one layer of jar rings

my first agar PC went well and I just used a sterile swab to knock up 3 plates from a Thai print.
the 4th one I unwrapped from the foil was like this:

the last 5 seem okay. Maybe I will put a tiny hole in them next time and cover with micro pore tape.
Also a little condensation in them but done is done, and now we wait!

I melted a hole with a soldering iron in side of mine and covered with mp tape, I pc for 30 to 45 at 17psi. Make sure the pressure comes down slow, turn eye off but leave it on that hot eye. You should never have a problem. After reaching 0 on its own, I remove and swirl condensation from sides, totally disappears over the next 5 to 6 days.

re: condensation, does anyone open these upside down in sab and actually wipe the sides out with a pre-soaked in 70% iso - semi dry paper towel?
Or is that just asking for trouble...

condensation is not the giant issue its apparently made out to be. i literally give it ZERO thought. i work with all my plates upside down, as should you. that means any water gets dumped on the sab bottom.
definitely do not wipe the inside. you may as well be smearing shit all over the inside if you do. its sterile, there is no reason to make it unsterile.

I use an old paver stone under my rack to elevate it. If its all getting sterile in there i got the cleanest brick on the planet lol. Done it 8 or 9 times with no bad results. Use whatever will hold up under the pressure

Look for that. Sometimes the "PP" underneath is omitted.

You will love it.. super fast and easy, i use BFR though instead of potato.. comes out more consistent for me, and less cloudy (my potato always seemed to have light and dark spots and such)
BTW.. instead of plastic plates i use 4oz widemouth ball jars.. should last years, no waste and cheap.. which is nice. but do take more room..

So how long can u keep these out of the fridge? Also would it be ok if I unwrapped all of them then put them in a freezer bag to store? I would think the inside is sterile.

There is no such thing.
There are 8 oz widemouth ball jars but I would reccomend kerr 8 oz wide mouth over them any day.
The 4 oz REGULAR MOUTH ball jars are what your thinking of and they work great for no pour agar.

You don't need to put them in the fridge or in a bag. You can perfectly store them at room temp in a plastic tote.
They are good for a long time after sterilization. I've kept blank plates for more than a month and they were perfectly good to use. The problem with keeping them too long is that the agar can dry out. To prolong their shelf life a good thing you can do is drill a tiny hole and cover it with at least 3 layers of mp tape.

Ok thanks. So do u leave them wrapped in the foil untill your ready to use them? I have them all in my SAB that’s inside another larger bin right now. But I’m going to have to use that to take a spore print. So I will probably just put the plates in a spare tote and cover up the holes I guess.
