So I found these at a local dollar store, pp5. nice and thick. Nice gasket sealed lid. I hate to poke a hole in them though. Is that step totally required?
I'm thinking FAE?

people buy those for like $2/3 pack at big lots. you dont need an extra hole.

$1.25CDN per stack of 3 at Dollarama here. Pretty sweet! We'll see how the lids hold up after PC.

The container is pp5. The lid on the other hand has melted on me the first time i pced it. Try to avoid stuffing your pc so there is a gap between the lids and the pc.

I was under the impression that the containers needed one so I put a hole in the big lots containers. Not so much to prevent crushing but for ae. I may be wrong but it hasn't messed my shit up yet so

Just want to jump in and confirm that this works great for a noob. I tried regular plates poured in a SAB and did something wrong and they got bacterial.
So I made another batch of agar solution (Grain water) and followed the tek as written. Came out great. Already cloned a couple of samples (and transferred a bit) of an Ecuador and have a B+ on another one.
I transferred and then used the "left behind" agar to knock up two jars, just to see how it works.

If you're still learning to spot trouble with your cultures then I'd suggest putting up pics of the growth BEFORE transferring to grain to get the ok from experienced ppl. That way you're not wasting your time producing jars of mold that could potentially compromise the rest of your work. Producing clean cultures should be the ultimate goal but you shouldn't have to go through the trial and error that those who came before us did. The learning curve could be shorter if you approach it in the right manner

I got a shiney new Presto 23qt PC today. The instruction manual says to use a MINIMUM of 3 qt water for canning.
That level of water is well above the rack that it comes with, so the agar plates will be sitting in the water.
Do you do it that way, or put something in there to raise the rack, or simply use less water?

I raise mine with jar rings. two levels high.
and only about 2 qts is needed for a agar pc cycle but you can use three to be safe the first time.
Just make sure when you get it up to psi that the weight isn't jiggling too much and therefore releasing too much steam and could run the pc dry.

I used the outer ring of a springform pan 9".. which lifts that rack up like 3" works perfect..

I like to use a steamer rack to raise the trivet. You can find these at Asian supermarkets. For 45min cycle, i only fill up to the level of the trivet, and there's plenty of water left over at the end.

Jar rings get super rusted, and its leaves ugly brown marks on the pot.

good advice.
I could use a couple of those.
sick of all the rusty jar rings. and the nasty water that comes from them.
