I just ordered some agar agar, I'm gonna try this when I get all the supplies I need. This will be my first attempt at this but there's enough good info here for me to feel semi-confident about it.

Agar is super easy. I don't understand why so many people have trouble with it.

The extra cost of agar, the extra time cooking it and the fact that if mess up that you still messed up. I don't care about if making it's easy as Jello. I care about the extra effort to see a tub contam out first flush which could have happened by shooting spores into jars just the same. Making agar is almost never the problem for the noon its checking clean growth and then tranfering it. Be honest it takes about a year to visually know what every contam looks like. I like agar now but still a huge pain starting out.

you are way more likely to tam out in one flush without using agar... Cleaning your inoculate saves time and money

And that's not even mentioning the fact that agar turns one 10cc ms syringe into an almost never ending supply of innoculant.

No doubt. It still surprises me that its possible to grow pounds and pound of shrooms with something you cant even see.

I seem contam in one of these. Far right pic bottom right corner. What do you guys think? Some are unusually thick and some stacking up fuzzy. Its the first round. Id like to tranfer most of these but also take at least 1 or 2 and put them straight to oats. I lost about 20% to bacteria i think you can see in one of these photos. It seems the lids warp a bit when you cook them 35 to 45 minutes which makes them loose fitting. What do you guys think?

looks decent, definitely a transfer or two away, looks like there may be something hiding in there

Maybe. You could try taking 1 or 2 to oats if you want. As long as you're okay with the possibility of losing the jars.
Also, only PC pasty plates 20 mins. C10 had a solid reason on it somewhere. Something about sugars. But agar needs no more then 20 mins at 15 psi.

20 min is okay for lab grade media with low populations. I wouldn't do that for things like grain soak water or potato flakes where you have higher populations and solids in the mix.

My plates arent too deep. So i can just quarter them and drop em in my jars im guessing? When i transfer them to "clean them up" which section would you recommend? I just cut the whole chunk, myc and agar and drop it myc down on a new plate? Sorry for all the questions. Ive seen a few different methods around. I cant afford to lost my nest egg of repopulation lol.

Some of mine have loose fitting lids but they're fine as long as you handle them carefully

Take from the outside edge of growth to "clean them up" You don't need more than a small piece

Double listing this here....
So i was ready to transfer these and i just dont feel right about it. The seem really fuzzy on top and arent laying nice and flat like others I see here. They appear fine from above but from the side you can see how bulky they are. Also some of the strands are developing knob like structures on the end of them and one now has a seperate white fuzzy colony growing beside it. What do you think?

Kinda reminds me of
