I take my left hand out of the SAB to hold my flame maybe 5" away from the hole and use my right hand, inside the SAB, to stick out my syringe/scalpel/loop to sterilize it.
Okay awesome, but you don't think flaming the needle in-between dishes even if it doesn't physically make contact with anything is necessary? There is a very good chance that I'm just being too anal about everything; I just want to have great technique. I have obviously developed a bad habit or two already..

Have I been wrong this whole time to think you need to flame sterilize your needles and other utensil in your SAB between jars/plates or whatever else to avoid cross contamination? Id rather have a lighter in there than alcohol swabs.. Or are you just saying don't use a lighter in combination with ISO in a SAB?
Id like to hear what box setup some of you use. Does this sound like an okay setup: disposable gloves, tyvek sleeves, inside sprayed with soapy water, lighter inside SAB?
Definitely best to flame outside the box. Other than being dangerous if you are working ISO, flames inside will stir up the the air. Ever blow out a smoke cloud and strike a lighter under it? You can see what a flame does to still air.
I don't use tyvek sleeves, just a tote with arm holes cut out sprayed with soapy water. Turn off central air/ fans. I shower and put freshly laundered clothes, gloves and mask. Everything going in is wiped down with Iso, my hands and arms as well.
You know, this crossed my mind yesterday while inoculating those dishes.. As I lit the lighter, I suddenly pictured my box as this upwelling convection chamber Won't be doing that anymore. I am changing my heathen ways. Thanks for the walkthrough Starstareeatatclouds and NDStepp!
BTW, for future reference (Have been out of the shroomery loop for a few years), should I not ask all these questions on someone else's thread? Should I have just made a separate thread like 10 posts ago? Apologies to Pasty if the answer is yes.

If I am using a spore syringe to agar I don't even use the needle. So I don't think flaming it is necessary.

I think pretty much everyone flame sterilizes with a torch or lamp outside of the SAB. Lighters take too long to get anything red hot, leave soot on shit, and are a pain to use with gloves on. With a butane torch or alcohol lamp, you can leave the flame running the entire you are working, which is rather convenient when you have a shitload of work to do.

I would really like to get a torch, but I can't justify buying one as long as my ghetto pill bottle/ busted wind chime lamp holds up. It has an adjustable flame and an aluminum foil snuffer cap

The difference in time it takes to get shit red hot with a torch is worth it alone. I hate doing SAB work so it going faster is a huge plus for me.

Ok so this agar work is waaaay easier than I thought it would be guys lol.
I made transfers from 2 plates a few days ago and they are already colonizing the new plates fast as hell, had ZERO contams so far with anything.
The 2 plates I made transfers from though I put the lid back on and sat them back on my shelf and they are still colonizing and show no signs of contams. Do you guys take transfers from plates on more than one occasion or no?

Sometimes. When testing clones I usually just put in the fridge and then transfer more once I decide its a keeper.
Also it's funny how easy agar can be. One of the best parts of the hobby and people are scared of it? Hell I'm scared not to use it.

Yea well I was in a rush to just get things going a few weeks back so I made 8 jars from MS anyway when starting the agar work. Now I realize though that if I transfer the 8 plates today into a grain jar by next week they may be further ahead than my ms jars are now.
Probably going to end up making a bunch more jars because I now realize what you can do with agar.
One question though, I initially made 12 plates, 8 did awesome but like 3 had super strong growth that I used for transfers while 4 still have not shown any signs of growth. Should I just clean the ones with no growth, reuse them, and transfer the good growth to them or sit and wait longer?

3 strong plates can be expanded infinitely. Why keep the other shit, you already have you work cut out for you expanding.
Once you get the hang of how fast you can expand when you are rolling with cultures you will soon know what it's like to have way too much stuff going on. You start putting stuff in the fridge to slow it down, spawn jars start to sit for 3 or 4 days cause ya got 2 dozen ones that are even older that need to be spawned ASAP. It gets pretty nuts if you let it.

I know it sounds like it's fun but it's actually heart-breaking sometimes.

what happens if you never transfer to grain, can you fruit on agar and grow like a single mushshroom or something?

It's cause people deep down want to grow all the mushrooms. I know I do. Hard to cut sometimes.

My Pastyplates are notorious for fruiting off the agar if I don't get to them in time. Yes, usually as single mushrooms.
